本书原来是用英文写的，书名为 Elementary Particles: A Short History of Some Discoveries in Atomic Physics ，是杨振宁于1959年11月在美国普林斯顿大学（Princeton University）为凡纽兴讲座（Vanuxem Lectures）所作演讲的讲稿略加修节而成，并在1962年初由普林斯顿大学出版社出版。该演讲原来是专为大学中对科学感兴趣的听众而作的，因此虽然所牵涉的问题有不少是目前基本粒子物理学中最突出和最深奥的问题，但是并不要求读者具备高深的物理学知识。本书英文版问世后不久即有移译成俄文、德文和意大利文之洽议，而中文版则尚付阙如。为此，我与范世藩不揣谫陋，将其译出，以飨读者，尚祈不吝指正。
