Reporter: The giant retailer Target confirmed today that hackers stole encrypted pin numbers during a major data breach that began at Thanksgiving. Some 40 million accounts are potentially affected. Target said it believes the encryption will keep the personal identification numbers safe. We get more now from Jim Finkle of the Reuters news service in Boston. Jim Finkle, welcome. First of all, what is the risk with the theft of these pin numbers? How is that different from losing other credit information?

Interviewee: You know, Judy, there may actually be no additional risk, because as you mentioned, the numbers are encrypted. The encryption algorithms that they use are so sophisticated that nobody can break them. The issue here, I think, that this highlights is a couple of things. Target originally gave us the impression that pins were not taken, encrypted or not. So that suggests that either they didn’t have a handle as to what happened or they weren’t being completely forthright.

Reporter: And why would that be?

Interviewee: I can think that—well, there’s a couple of reasons. First of all, it is very difficult to figure out what happened in a breach of this size. But in terms of not being forthright, you know, it was the Christmas holiday season. And I think they wanted to keep their—they didn’t want to alarm customers. They worried about the potential litigation. And they were also worried about regulatory and congressional investigations.

Reporter: And there’s still other information, though, that was stolen, in addition to these pin numbers that is out there.

Interviewee: Yes, sure. All of the information on the magnetic stripe on the back of your credit card was stolen. And that can be used to create fake credit cards. Now, it’s possible that, you know, some people’s credit—not credit card—bank accounts have been drained, and we’re still trying to figure out how that happened. It may be that they got the pin numbers another way. You know, with a pin number, you can access somebody’s bank account. So, you know, what I was talking about at the beginning about them not having all the information, about them not being forthright, we still have to find out what’s going on with that.

Reporter: And, just quickly, what should Target customers be doing right now?

Interviewee: If you’ve gotten notification that your bank account or credit card was compromised, I would ask the bank to replace it. Some of them are saying that’s not necessary, but I’ve been told by everybody who is knowledgeable that it’s what you should do.

Reporter: Jim Finkle with Reuters, we thank you.

Interviewee: Thank you.

10 B 根据录音中被访者的回答“What surprised us in this study was the extent to which that public impact was focused on the working age adults”可知,这项研究最令人惊讶的地方在于,过量饮酒对成年劳动力的影响。

由“then any alcohol consumption by groups that we know to be at particular high risk of harms from alcohol consumption, specially underage youth, that is youth under age 21, and pregnant women”可知,不满21岁的未成年人和孕妇为高风险人群。

12 D 根据录音中被访者的话“But it’s also a very expensive drinking at about $224 billion a year”可知,饮酒是个奢侈的行为,每年的成本达到两千两百四十亿美元。

13 A 在回答实际人们的饮酒量是否有可能比数据要高时,被访者答到“we know that people tend to significantly under-report their alcohol consumption”,即他认为是有可能的,因为人们总是会明显少报自己的饮酒量。

14 A 在回答是否有改变人们饮酒行为的政策时,被访者回答“politics that relates to the price and availability of alcohol are among those that we think can be most impactful in reducing excessive alcohol consumption”,即调整酒的价格,限制酒的销售是最有效的方法。

其中第一次出现是在解释过量饮酒(excessive drinking)时,因此,由“excessive alcohol use is a sort of an umbrella term that we used for various patterns of alcohol consumption…we would include binge-drinking”可知,答案为D项。

Reporter: First of all, we have known that excessive drinking has different costs on society. It’s often a tragedy for the family or the loved ones of the disease, but what surprised you about these numbers in the study?

Interviewee: Well, Hari, you are right, we have known that excessive alcohol use is a huge public health problem for a long time. What surprised us in this study was the extent to which that public health impact was focused on working-age adults. And as you noted in your opener, we estimate that about one in 10 deaths among working-age adults, ages 20-64 years, are attributable to excessive alcohol use. That’s a huge number and certainly indicates to us that we need to redouble our efforts to prevent it.

Reporter: So this study also said that—other statistic that reached out to me was the fourth leading cause of death attributable to excessive drinking. How do we define excessive?

Interviewee: Well, excessive alcohol use is a sort of an umbrella term that we use for various patterns of alcohol consumption and also for drinking among certain high-risk groups. So under the umbrella, we would include binge-drinking, which is, for a woman, consuming four or more drinks on an occasion that is within a short period of time, for men, five or more drinks within an occasion that is again within a short period of time, basically drinking to the point of acute intoxication. And then any alcohol consumption by groups that we know to be at particularly high risk of harms from alcohol consumption, specifically underage youth, that is youth under age 21, and pregnant women.

Reporter: And what are these factors that influence that? Does it happen more among males, more among young people?

Interviewee:Well, there certainly are some important differences across different population groups. And yes, we know that men tend to binge-drink more than women. The prevalence, as we call it, the proportion of people who report binge-drinking is higher in younger-age groups, 18-24, but also 25-34. But it’s important to recognize that this really is an important public health problem across the lifespan. But it’s also a very expensive problem for all of us. And, as you noted in your opening, we estimate the economic cost of excessive drinking at about $224 billion a year. And a large proportion of that cost, about $2 out of every $5, is paid for by government. So, essentially, all of us are paying the cost of excessive alcohol use.

Reporter: And the results of this survey are self-reported. So is there a possibility that the numbers you’re talking about could even be higher?

Interviewee: Absolutely. The estimates that we reported in our study, which, again, are deaths that are attributable to excessive alcohol use, are calculated in a variety of different ways, but part of that calculation does involve self-reports of alcohol consumption by individuals. And we know that people tend to significantly under-report their alcohol consumption.

Reporter: So what do we know about policies or practices that change consumption behavior? What works?

Interviewee: From a public perspective, policies that relate to the price and availability of alcohol are among those that we think can be most impactful in reducing excessive alcohol consumption.

An improvement in Beijing’s air quality last year compared with 2014 may have had more to do with weather patterns than with a decline in emission, environment experts say. The Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau said Beijing’s “number of days of most serious PM2.5 pollution is failing each year. Its air quality appeared to improve in the first 10 months of 2015 compared with the same period a year earlier”. The deterioration in air quality in the final two months of the year “was due to wind and humidity”. Beijing’s air quality “is affected more by that of nearby regions than before”.

The bunch of documents passed to the BBC and Buzzfeed News include the findings of an investigation set up in 2007 by the ATP. Secret files expose evidence of widespread suspected match fixing at the top level of world tennis. Over the last decade 16 players who have ranked in the top 50 have been repeatedly flagged to the tennis integrity unit over suspicions they have thrown matches. In a confidential report for the tennis authorities in 2008, the enquiry team said 28 players involved in these games should be investigated. About 10 players were the most common perpetrators that were at the root of the problem.

19 Why is it difficult to find a clear link between pay practices and performance?

A. People don’t respond to financial incentives as readily or enthusiastically as before.

B. Workers do different jobs, and it’s hard to make comparisons among them.

C. Employers don’t want to dampen anybody’s enthusiasm by paying them less.

D. Today’s jobs often involve teamwork and it’s no longer easy to measure individual effort.

Numerous studies have attempted to find a clear link between pay practices and performance, but have largely failed. It’s not that people don’t respond to financial incentives. They clearly do. The problem, however, is that today’s jobs generally involve teamwork. Success is less due to an individual’s effort, and measurement of individual effort becomes more complex, if not impossible. In these situations, pay for performance can often seem unfair and arbitrary, and the result can demotivate, rather than motivate employees. Resentment can fester, and significant time and energy can be wasted.

20 Which stage is the case at?

A. The civil complaint has just been filed.

B. Volkswagen has agreed to make compensations.

WASHINGTON—The Justice Department sued the German automaker Volkswagen in federal court Monday, saying that the company installed illegal devices in nearly 600,000 diesel engine systems to impair emission controls. The government is seeking an array of penalties against the company, including fines and further actions to mitigate the emission of harmful pollutants. The complaint does not specify actions the company must take to further reduce emissions, nor does it name a dollar figure for the penalty. The complaint represented the first step in legal action against Volkswagen and did not preclude a criminal charge.

Section D (10 marks)

According to a recent Internal Revenue Service report, there are 18.6 million small businesses in the United States. The US Small Business Administration reports that small businesses including the self-employed account for 58 percent of the US workforce and 40 percent of the gross national product. A National Science Foundation analysis shows that small businesses are a greater source of innovation per research and development dollar than are large businesses.

And yet, starting a small business is very risky, and the change of success is small. According to the US Small Business Administration, the majority of small businesses fail in their first year, and 95 percent fail in the first five years. Underestimating the difficulties is one of the biggest impediments that entrepreneurs face.

Another impediment for many people interested in beginning their own business is their ability to obtain loans. The rationale for banks is to supply money to those who already have money, collateral, and a credit history in order to assure repayment. This rationale, however, keeps those who are poor from creating financial self-sufficiency.

Grameen Bank, created by Muhammad Yunnus of Bangladesh in 1976, has a different rationale. Grameen Bank provides small loans, typically under $100, to poor individuals who are unable to borrow from conventional bank, in order for them to establish “micro businesses.” To date, these include tailoring, food processing, basket weaving, livestock raising, and a number of other small enterprises. Grameen Bank currently boasts nearly two and half million borrowers in Bangladesh, Malaysia, India, Uganda, Mexico, the United States, and other countries. Proving that their policy of trusting their clients’ works, Yunnus states that their experience with bad debt is less than one percent.

46 especially

47 follows

48 Indian

由第二段“Xuanzang traveled alone through Central Asia to the land of Tianzhu (present-day India)”可知,此国家为印度,另外此处应填入形容词形式,因此填Indian。)

49 quest

50 time

51 to

be dedicated to为固定搭配,表示“致力于”,故空格处应填to。)

52 enlightenment

53 immortality

54 handsome

55 realistic

Part Ⅳ Reading Comprehension (35 marks)

Read the following passages. Each passage is followed by several questions. Respond to the questions using information from the passage. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet.

Section A (5 marks)

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.

London, England—Virtually every country in Europe is in an immigration mess. Governments are trying to balance the concerns of their citizens, their country’s economic problems, and the humanitarian needs of immigrants. Native-born Europeans are worrying that their cultures and economies are being harmed by immigrants. Meanwhile, the immigrants keep coming. Some come looking for asylum because of racial, religious, or political oppression in their native lands. Others are trying to escape grinding poverty or war at home.

With fifteen million people unemployed in the European Union (EU) alone, outsiders are often resented. Some people fear that asylum seekers are too expensive for the EU’s social welfare systems. Others are worried that economic migrants may take their jobs. Still others worry about the weakening of traditional local cultures in places where there are large numbers of immigrants.

Right-wing parties in Austria, Denmark and Belgium have successfully campaigned against immigration, using fear of the loss of national identity. Meanwhile, criminals are making money on the desperation of would-be immigrants. People-smuggling has become a highly organized and profitable business. Because smugglers care little for the people they are transporting, tragedies sometimes result.

Even if they survive the trip, illegals are often mistreated in sweatshops, where they work for much less than normal wages in terrible conditions. Some of them spend decades paying back the transportation fees. Women and children are sometimes forced into sex slavery and prostitution.

To make matters even more confusing, there is another side to immigration. Many European countries have a shortage of skilled workers in areas like information technology. “We need immigration,” declared German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder recently. Barbara Roche, the UK’s immigration minister, has made it easier for non-British students to stay. “In the past we have thought purely about immigration control,” she said. “Now we need to think about immigration management.”

High-tech workers are not the only ones who are needed. Some countries are short of cheap manual labor, too. In Spain, whose population is decreasing, North Africans work on the farms, while Poles and Romanians do construction work.

Retirement programs need immigrants, too. In most European nations, people are living longer and having fewer children. Governments will not be able to pay retirees without large- scale immigration. Jean-Pierre Chevenement, the former French interior minister, said Europe will need 50 million to 75 million immigrants during the next 50 years. In Italy there were eight workers to every retiree in the 1950s. There are fewer than four today and, without immigration, the figure will drop to 1.5 by 2050. Likewise, Germany will need three million immigrants a year to maintain the current ratio of workers to retirees.

Faced with these facts, it is not surprising that the European Union has said zero-immigration policies are inappropriate. One official states, “Our aim is to open as large a debate as possible on immigration and asylum.”

Questions 56 to 60

Mark each statement as either true (T) or false (F) according to the passage.

56 Two reasons for natives against immigration are mentioned in the passage.

57 Many immigrants are concerned about the loss of their national identity.

58 The aging of the population aggravates the need for immigrant workers.

59 EU countries are trying to create a balanced immigration policy.

60 Though bringing great pressure, large-scale immigration in the EU is inevitable in the next few decades.

Section B (10 marks)

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.

Boston—Many college students today struggle with cheating. The Internet offers many temptations—there are term papers for sale along with articles and news reports that can be copied for free with the click of a mouse. It is not surprising that cheating is sometimes difficult to resist.

(61) ___________________________Polly Sanders, a student at a small liberal arts college, knows that handing in a paper from the Internet is plagiarism. But what about using a paragraph? She admits that she has often taken a paragraph and changed a few words to make it “her” own work. That’s not plagiarizing, is it? Polly may not know it but, according to her college, it is.

(62) _____________________________This uncertainty is partly due to the fact that standards are changing. A 2001 survey by the Center for Academic Integrity shows cheating is becoming acceptable. The survey found that 41 percent of students believe that plagiarism is common. Perhaps most worrying was the 27 percent who said that falsifying laboratory data happens “often or very often” on campus. It’s hard to believe that all of these young scientists change their ways after graduation.

(63) _____________________________Some administrators use sophisticated computer search engines to find Internet plagiarists. However, many other colleges are using honor codes to combat cheating. An effective honor code clearly describes the boundaries of legitimate and illegitimate work. In addition, it sets the penalties for breaking it. Educators say that the simple act of students signing the honor code makes a difference. “It’s a psychological effect; if people expect you to be honorable, you are more likely to respond with honorable behavior,” says Nannerl O. Keohane, the president of Duke University in North Carolina.

Honor codes are becoming more and more popular across the United States. The University of North Carolina and the University of Maryland give cheaters grades of XF to indicate failure because of cheating. Cornell University rewrote its honor code in 2000 and now requires teaching assistants and freshmen to take courses that teach them what cheating is and how to avoid it.

(64) _____________________________They may offer students more freedom, but, if they do not obey, the punishment is severe. For example, the honor code at Wellesley College in Massachusetts allows students to take exams when and where they want. The students simply inform the teacher when they will be taking the exam. Then they can choose to go wherever they want. The students are trusted, but if they are caught cheating, the punishment can be severe.

(65) _____________________________University officials think that there are different reasons for this phenomenon. “The feeling of being treated as an adult and responding in kind,” Professor McCabe says, “it’s clearly there for many students. They don’t want to violate that trust.”

Questions 61 to 65

Choose from the sentences A-G the one which best fits each gap of 61-65. There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

A. If students are becoming less concerned about the ramifications of cheating, colleges and universities are working harder to catch the cheaters.

B. If she gets caught, she’ll receive a failing grade or maybe be thrown out of school.

C. A culture where people are genuinely offended by cheating have to be built.

D. Polly is not the only student who isn’t sure what’s cheating and what isn’t.

E. Some people say that simply putting in an honor code won’t solve the problem, but several studies since the 1960s have shown that schools without honor codes tend to have about twice as much cheating as those with honor codes in place.

F. Furthermore, students often do not understand exactly what constitutes cheating.

G. Honor codes can be both a carrot and a stick.

G选项中“can be both a carrot and a stick”是一种暗喻,指的是用惩罚和奖励两种手段以诱发人们产生所要求的行为。

Section C (10 marks)

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage.

Natural history fans will probably be familiar with the nine seasons of the Life series made by British broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough. Famous for his hushed, yet enthusiastic delivery and his ability to find any sort of plant or animal interesting, he is one of the most enduring presences on UK television. In a career spanning more than sixty years, Attenborough has been a key witness to the development of the wildlife documentary.

When Attenborough’s career began in 1952, people’s attitude towards nature was very different. Everybody thought that animals were to be tracked, captured, tied up and brought back home to be gawped at. As a typical naturalist of the age, Attenborough admits to being no different from the rest. He is known to have done a sequence with an under-sized crocodile, filming it up close so that it appeared to be bigger, and jumping on it to give the false impression of a fight. But Attenborough is by no means proud of his actions.

In addition to this change of attitude towards nature , Attenborough has also seen a leap in the technology used to film wildlife documentaries. He started his career in broadcasting when those people lucky enough to own a television possessed a very basic black and white set. The images were captured with a lightweight, wind-up camera, which was positively primitive compared to the technology used to film his latest series. New cutting-edge 3D technology has been used to capture mesmerizing images. The pictures more than compensate for the difficulty of transporting the equipment—it takes two or three men to carry each 3D camera.

However, improvements in technology have not been the most important development in the last six decades. During this period, a number of scientific revolutions have changed our perspective on the natural world. One of the new concepts is continental drift, an idea which helps explain the variation in the plants and animals on different continents. Another is the discovery of the structure of DNA, which has completely changed the way we see the world. David Attenborough has responded to these new theories by traveling to every conceivable part of the planet to find evidence to support them. He has also interviewed many of the scientists behind them in his documentaries.

Unfortunately, there is also a negative side to the changes that Attenborough has witnessed over the years. Today, wildlife documentaries are more about the importance of conserving nature rather than purely showing the wonders of the living world. This is because these marvels are being destroyed at an alarming rate. In their films, naturalists like Attenborough want to inform people about the state of the world in the hope that a worldwide protest will slowly grow, with younger people wanting something to be done to protect the planet . “The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it.”

Questions 66 to 70

Answer the following questions with the information given in the passage.

66 Why is David Attenborough called one of the most enduring presences on UK television?

67 What new technology has been used in David Attenborough’s latest documentary series?

68 What does the word “them” in the last sentence of Paragraph 4 refer to?

69 What are the naturalists’ expectations for the future?

70 List the changes affecting wildlife documentaries mentioned in the passage.

66 His career as a broadcaster spanned more than 60 years and he’s been a key witness to the development of the wildlife documentary.

(文章第一段中间部分“he is one of the most enduring presences on UK television”,紧接着就介绍了他在电视上长盛不衰的原因。

67 New-cutting age 3D technology.

(原文第三段倒数第二句直接给出了答案“New cutting-edge 3D technology has been used to capture mesmerizing images”,所以“New-cutting age 3D technology”即为答案。)

68 New theories of continental drift and the discovery of the structure of DNA.

文中提到“One of the new concepts is continental drift”,“Another is the discovery of the structure of DNA”,所以“them”代指的就是这两种观点。)

69 Worldwide protest against wildlife destruction will slowly grow and younger people can do something to protect the planet.

70 The change of attitude towards nature, improvements in technology, scientific revolutions, and more documentaries focusing on the importance of nature conservation rather than purely showing the wonders of the living world.

Section D (10 marks)

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage.

It is obvious that humans are unlike all other animals. It is also obvious that we are a species of big mammal. That contradiction is the most fascinating feature of the human species. It is familiar, but we still have difficulty grasping how it came to be and what it means. On the one hand, between ourselves and all other species lies a seemingly unbridgeable gulf that we acknowledge by defining a category called “animals”. It implies that we consider centipedes, chimpanzees and clams to share decisive features with each other but not with us, and to lack features restricted to us. Among these characteristics unique to us are the abilities to talk, write, and build complex machines.

Thus, for practical and legal purposes, humans are not animals. When Darwin intimated in 1859 that we had evolved from apes, it is no wonder that most people initially regarded his theory as absurd.

On the other hand, we obviously are animals, with the usual animal body parts, molecules and genes. It is even clear what particular type of animal we are. Externally, we are so similar to chimpanzees that eighteen-century anatomists who believed in divine creation could already recognize our affinities.

Molecular genetic studies over the last half-a-dozen years have shown that we continue to share over ninety-eight percent of our genes with the other two chimps. The overall genetic distance between us and chimps is even smaller than the distance between such closely related bird species as red-eyed and white-eyed vireos, or willow warblers and chiffchaffs. So we still carry most of our old biological baggage with us. Since Darwin’s time, fossilized bones of hundreds of creatures variously intermediate between apes and modern humans have been discovered, making it impossible for a reasonable person to deny the overwhelming evidence.

Yet the discoveries of many missing links have only made the problem more fascinating, without fully solving it. The two percent of our genes that differ from those of chimps must have been responsible for all of our seemingly unique properties. We underwent some small changes with big consequences rather quickly and recently in our evolutionary history.

What were those few key ingredients that made us human? Since our unique properties appeared so recently and involved so few changes, those properties or at least their precursors must already be present in animals. What are those animal precursors of art and language, of genocide and drug abuse?

Our unique qualities have been responsible for our present biological success as a species. No other large animal is native to all the continents, or breeds in all habitats from deserts and the Arctic to tropical rainforests. No large wild animal rivals us in numbers. But among our unique qualities are two that now jeopardize our existence: our propensities to kill each other and to destroy our environment. Of course, both propensities occur in other species: lions and many other animals kill their own kind, while elephants and others damage their environment. However, these propensities are much more threatening in us than in other animals because of our technological power and exploding numbers.

Questions 71 to 75

Complete the summary below with information from the passage, using three words or fewer for each blank.

71 evolutionary/evolution

中间又提到“but we still have difficulty grasping how it came to be and what it means.”“how it come to be”意为“我们是怎么来的”,即我们是怎么进化的,也就是进化历史。所以这里填evolutionary/evolution。

72 molecules and genes

第三段第一句提到“On the other hand, we obviously are animals, with the usual animal body parts, molecules and genes.”,所以这里填molecules and genes。

73 big mammal

文章第一段第二句就提到了“It is also obvious that we are a species of big mammal.”,所以这里应该填big mammal。

74 our existence

文章最后一段中间部分提到“But among our unique qualities are two that now jeopardize our existence.”,可见这里应该填our existence。

75 technological power

文章最后一段最后一句明确提到“However, these propensities are much more threatening in us than in other animals because of our technological power and exploding numbers.”

The Great Gatsby is a portrayal of a fascinating time in US history and the gripping and moving story is told in expressive and intricate detail. The novel has a fast-moving and riveting plot, but what appealed to the readers most was the way that the protagonists’ complex personalities are revealed over the course of the story. Daisy has a touching vulnerability and charm, but is self-centred and shallow. And Gatsby, a fake and a liar, has a moral integrity unmatched by the characters who grew up with money. It’s a must-read.

94 In a pet shop there are 5 hutches in a row. A different rabbit is in each hutch. Work out, from the clues, where each rabbit belongs.

The black rabbit is next to the white rabbit with red eyes.

The floppy eared rabbit is in one of the end hutches.

The fat rabbit is not next to the brown and white rabbit, and it is further to the right than the floppy eared rabbit.

The brown and white rabbit is between the floppy eared rabbit and the white rabbit.

Hutch 2 _____ Hutch 3 _____

【答案】 brown and white; white

Write an essay of no less than 160 words on the answer sheet to express your personal views on the subject.

As the contact among different regions becomes increasingly closer, Chins has established the promotion of Mandarin Chinese as a basic national policy. But as time goes by, many dialects are disappearing. Recently, there is a heated debate on whether dialects should be allowed on air to protect it. As for me, I am in favor of this proposal.

Although dialects may become less used by people with the development of society, which is seen as a normal inevitable phenomenon, it is necessary to prevent those wonderful culture heritage from disappearing. The coexistence of a variety of provincial dialects is a manifestation of cultural prosperity and diversity. On my part, programs specially themed by dialects shall be supported, which would not conflict with those TV programs spoken in Mandarin Chinese. It will enable people to become aware of inheriting and preserving traditional culture.

The unique features of a local environment always give special characteristics to its inhabitants. Dialects should not be the disappearing culture. Consequently, promoting the programs in local dialects is a necessity. Y2A1zHAjRQ0CD+A0jw+bvd9AvwV0PYdaKn40XtTJxumOMuKnHZ8fvNc/Lauq9pFh
