Alan: The story opens in 1912 on the rugged farmland of Southern England. A farmer brings home a colt from the local horse auction and a lifelong relationship begins between the spirited animal and the farmer’s shy teenager, Albert.

ALBERT: “I’ll train him.”

MOTHER: "You stay out of this, Albert. You don’t know nothing about horses.”

ALBERT: “Please, mom. Please let me. I can do it.”

MOTHER: “Well, you’ve got one month to break him in or I’m taking him back myself.”

Alan: The horse that Albert names “Joey” grows into a strong and smart steed—exactly the kind of animal the British Cavalry needs two years later when World War I breaks out in Europe. Joey goes off to war and Albert quickly follows, determined to find and bring home the horse he loves so dearly. War Horse began as a historical novel for young readers that was adapted as a stage play in London with Joey and the other horses in the story portrayed by life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company. After seeing a performance of the play, Steven Spielberg decided to make a film version.

Spielberg: So many people came out of the play talking about the brilliant puppetry of the horses; but I came out of the play affected—not because they were puppets playing horses and great puppeteers creating a reality with those—but I came out of the play very, very struck emotionally by the storytelling of the people who adapted Michael Morpurgo’s book into a play.

Alan: The book is told through the thoughts of Joey as the horse endures years on the front lines. In the play, it is Albert and the other people telling the story and Spielberg felt that the film had to take that approach, especially because it features real horses.

Spielberg: Because the second Joey starts to speak it becomes much more of a real fable and I think you suspend your disbelief so radically when the horse starts to think out loud that there are no touchstones with your own life or anything you can relate to, so the first decision was not to let Joey think or speak, but just let Joey emote and exist inside the sequences with these human characters.

Alan: Although brutal battles are part of the story, Spielberg says War Horse is not a war movie.

Spielberg: I consider it to be a character story, I consider it to be a love story between a horse and a young man and also a story of great hope and great connection that this horse makes to every character, both German and British, as the horse travels on an episodic journey…on almost an odyssey through his own life, through his own experiences surviving the war. The war is a backdrop that allows us to create drama, but World War I isn’t the reason I made this movie.

Part Ⅳ Reading Comprehension (35 marks)

Read the following passages. Each passage is followed by several questions. Respond to the questions using information from the passage. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet.

Section A (5 marks)

Questions 56—60 are based on the following passage.

Are there really those who are night people and those who are day people, or is that simply a routine that can be changed? Scientists are conducting various studies designed to discover definitive answers to these questions and have come up with some very interesting results.

Approximately 80% of people are in the middle of the day/night spectrum. They only slightly favour one side or the other and might shift between the two according to circumstances. It is starting to look like the remaining 20% are what could be termed ‘extremes’. Around 10% are extreme night people or ENP, and the other 10% are extreme day people or EDP. The ENP do not achieve their top performance levels until around late afternoon, becoming very alert and productive around six in the evening. The EDP are the complete opposite. They clearly get going in the morning and hit their peak around noon.

All of this is caused by what are called ‘circadian rhythms’ which is basically a 24-hour cycle that governs the transition from waking to sleeping and back again. If someone wants to increase their productivity then it is useful to determine with certainty where they are in this spectrum. But how do they do that? Circadian rhythm works by regulating body temperatures and hormones. The two major hormones are ‘melatonin’ and ‘cortisol’. The former increases just before it is time to sleep and the latter increases just before the first moves back to consciousness. Body temperatures go down through the night, the core body heat at its lowest in the middle of the night, and increase to wake a person up. Therefore, when these chemical changes are occurring helps to determine whether someone is a night person or a day person. So by monitoring those changes scientists are able to determine a person’s natural tendencies.

In most people, however, those tendencies are not static. They keep changing as people age and can also be affected by social changes. As people get older they require less sleep so they produce lower amounts of hormone. Travel and work affect how people experience the need for sleep. The demands of the university life are very different from the demands that most middle-aged adults deal with on a day-to-day basis. Ultimately people need to monitor themselves, how they feel and how well they perform. Working at night and sleeping late might work right now, but later it may just turn out to be exactly the reverse.

Questions 56—60

Decide the following statements are true (T) or false (F) according to the passage.

56 The ENP are productive after six in the evening whereas the EDP are most productive at noon.

57 Most people are classified either as extreme day people or extreme night people.

58 Circadian rhythm is a biological rhythm that is more or less synchronized with a 24-hour cycle.

59 Once body temperatures and hormones become natural tendencies they stay the same forever.

60 Burning midnight oil may eventually prove harmful to health.

Section B (10 marks)

Questions 61—65 are based on the following passage.

Some say college is wasted on the young. So many of us look back at our own college years and realize what we could have done differently to make the most of them. While we can’t go back, we certainly can offer our sons and daughters our best advice to help them make the right choices in college. Hopefully, they will have fewer regrets than we do. Following are five guidelines parents can share with their college-bound kids to put the whole experience in perspective.

(61) ______ That limits our ability to be decision makers who can positively impact our community. So it’s on you to change that and make a difference by ensuring your education is your first priority. As soon as you arrive on campus, there will be competing interests. Feel free to check them out but always remember that you are there first and foremost for your education. Go to class prepared and on time. Be engaged during class. Make sure your professor knows you and realizes that you care.

(62) ______ Do what you say you will do and, if you can’t, own up to it early and communicate clearly. But being responsible isn’t just about meeting your commitments; it is also about taking care of you, your body, and your friends. For example, more than 1,800 college students die annually from alcohol-related injuries. Look out for yourself and other people. Make moderate, sensible decisions so you aren’t reeling from the consequences later.

(63) ______ Don’t let fear prevent you from taking advantage of them. There may never be so much time or as many resources devoted to your betterment again in your life. Say yes to opportunities that will help you grow.

(64) ______ One of the most powerful growth opportunities is being a mentor. Early on, find someone on campus who you feel can help you grow and develop a relationship with him or her. Also find someone for you to mentor. You will reinforce and enrich your own learning experience by teaching someone else.

(65) ______ Resist that urge. As Jocelyn Negron-Rios, a mother of two, who is currently completing her degree, advises, “No matter how difficult it seems, keep at it because however insurmountable it feels now multiply that by 10,000 and that is how it feels when you are in your thirties with a full-time job and a family and are trying to pursue a degree.”

Questions 61—65

Complete the article with the following sentences. There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use.

A. There are many layers of responsibility.

B. Some of the best lessons available to us can come outside of the classroom in the form of a mentor.

C. This could have an enormous social impact.

D. Only 13% of Latino adults hold a College degree.

E. In a few decades, parents may be able to choose many genetic characteristics of their children.

F. Incredible opportunities will present themselves: studying abroad, interning at a unique place, trying new things.

G. It is natural to occasionally feel you want to quit, when it makes more sense to you to go find a full-time job.

64 B 空格后一句提到“One of the most powerful growth opportunities is being a mentor(最有效的成长机会是成为良师益友。)”

Section C (10 marks)

Questions 66—70 are based on the following passage.

Some people may choose to live on water for the pleasure and enjoyment of having a home that is different from the homes of most others. Others live on water because they have nowhere else to live. Some people work on or close to the water, so they make their homes nearby. Throughout history, people have lived on water as a protection from enemies, wild animals, and flooding.

In many parts of the Far East, people live on boats. These floating homes are often tied up close together by the banks of large rivers or in a harbor. People can jump up from boat to boat without getting wet. Babies and young children sometimes have a block of wood tied to their backs so they will float if they fall in the water.

Some of the floating homes were sailboats used for fishing. They are now too old to sail, so they are used as houseboats instead. When people go ashore, they walk over a small wooden bridge called a gangplank which stretches from the boats to dry land.

Many houseboats in Kashmir in northern India are wooden houses with more than one story built on a wooden hull. The people that live in these houseboats use smaller boats to row from their homes to shore.

When boat-dwellers migrate from one place to another they often take their homes with them. Many work in their boats as well as eat, sleep, relax, play, and raise their families there.

The Bajau people—often called sea gypsies or pirates—live on boats and travel between islands in Southeast Asia. The Bajau live on small sailing boats called lipas which are less than 26 feet long. A frame of poles, which extends over the sides of the boat, is covered with woven rushes. The boat is kept steady by outriggers, which are long, stabilizing poles at each side.

In the port of Hong Kong, many people live on houseboats. Many families cannot afford to buy houses on land and even some who are wealthy prefer to live on boats. Most boats are now powered by motor, but a few are sailboats. The harbor is crowded with boats, which have canvas or wooden roofs to protect people from the sun. Washing is dried over the flat roofs that are even strong enough to walk on.

A sampan—used as a home by poor people—is a much smaller boat, which can be used for catching fish or as a ferryboat to take people across the water. Sampans often have canvas covers to give protection from rain and sun. In most parts of the Far East, sampans have only one mast, but in the Hong Kong, some have two.

Questions 66—70

Answer the following questions according to the passage.

66 What are the main reasons that people choose to live on water apart from pleasure or work?

67 What do some Far East boat dwellers do to guarantee the safety of their children?

68 Why are the Bajau people called sea gypsies or pirates?

69 Why do a lot of people in Hong Kong live on boats?

70 How do people living on sampans keep themselves from rain and sun?

66 Because they want to stay away from danger or they have nowhere to live.

67 They tie a block of wood to their children’s backs.

(文中第二段指出“Babies and young children sometimes have a block of wood tied to their backs so they will float if they fall in the water.”,可知为了保证孩子的安全,他们在孩子身上绑一块木板。)

68 They live on boats and travel between islands in Southeast Asia.

(原文倒数第三段提到“Bajau people—often called sea gypsies or pirates—live on boats and travel between islands in Southeast Asia”,可知他们被称为海上吉普赛人的原因是因为他们住在船上,往来于东南亚群岛间。)

69 Some cannot afford to buy houses on land, and some wealthy people prefer to live on boats.

70 They often use canvas covers.

(原文最后一段提到“Sampans often have canvas covers to give protection from rain and sun”。

Section D (10 marks)

Questions 71—75 are based on the following passage.

When you open the business section of any newspaper at the end of the year, all the reports seem to be about results for the fiscal year. But just like a school year or lunar year, the fiscal year is a little different from the regular calendar year.

A fiscal year is a 12-month period that records the annual financial reports for businesses, organisations and governments. These records give shareholders and analysts information on how well the businesses are doing. They are also necessary because they help investors and other companies prepare for the future. All this preparation helps the economy continue to run smoothly.

Starbucks Corp. released the record of its fourth fiscal quarter and the full fiscal year, which ended Oct.1, on Nov.16.“The record results we reported today for the fourth quarter and the full fiscal year are a testament to the overall health and strength of our global business, ”commented Troy Alstead, CFO. “The momentum we have built throughout the year continued in the fourth quarter, with the strength of same store sales growth demonstrating that our product innovation and overall store experience are resonating extremely well with our customers. As a result of the strong finish to fiscal 2011, Starbucks entered the new fiscal year well positioned to continue pursuing significant profitable growth opportunities.”

The start date of the fiscal year is different in different businesses and countries. So, for example, the U.S. government begins its fiscal year Oct.1 and the Australian government begins its July 1. Thailand starts its fiscal year in September. The United Kingdom and India have chosen a different fiscal-year system. In these countries, the fiscal year varies from April to March. In China, the fiscal year starts Jan.1 and ends Dec.31. France, Italy, Germany, Russia use the same fiscal year as China.

Fiscal years don’t always start from January and end in December, however. When a business opens, it decides what month will start its fiscal year. In fact, many businesses don’t choose to follow the regular calendar year for their fiscal year because December is usually a very busy time. In the United Kingdom, many companies have continued to use the government fiscal year, which expires March 31, since they privatized. Nonetheless, the fiscal year and calendar year are the same in about over 60 percent of companies in the United States and the majority of businesses in England.

In each fiscal year there are four quarters. Each is three months long and is often called a fiscal quarter. Businesses usually report results for each fiscal quarter as well as annual results for their fiscal year.

State your opinions on this topic in 160-180 words. Write the answer on the answer sheet.

The Importance of Cooperation

Cooperation is crucial in man’s activities, including business work, family life and even social development. In the current fierce competition of our society, only through close cooperation can we ensure effectiveness and improve efficiency.

With the rapid technological specialization and social development, on the one hand, more and more tasks need to be accomplished with collaborative efforts. On the other hand, social development can’t do without social division of labor, as the saying goes “many hands make light work.” Through cooperation within the team, members of the society complement each other’s weaknesses with their strengths. Then the efficiency of social construction, production and other social activities could get great improvement.
