1 The International Friendship Club was established three _____ ago.
2 A club member has to pay for _____ arranged trips.
3 An active participant can get a special medal as _____.
4 The membership fee is £_____ for an academic year.
5 One needs to provide _____ and address to become a club member.
M: 2466. Simon speaking.
W: Hello. Is that the right number for the International Friendship Club?
M: Yes, that’s right. How can I help?
W: I picked up a copy of your newsletter in the Students’ Union, and I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the club?
M: Yes, of course. We set up the club three years ago as a way of promoting international understanding. So we’ve been established for a while now. And there’re meetings every Thursday evening, during term time, that is...
W: Thursday, right?
M: Yes, we usually show a film or maybe run a competition of some kind. But mostly it’s an opportunity for people to get together, relax and make friends. And we also produce a regular newsletter—I think you said you’d seen a copy of that...
W: The newsletter? Yes, it looked interesting.
M: So, you know, it got loads of information about what’s on in the area and about living in Britain in general. We also have quite a busy social programme with outings to places of interest like London or Oxford.
W: Sounds great.
M: And one other thing to mention. We like to encourage people to attend regularly and play a real part in the club. So we give special certificates as a reward for active participation. It’s something you can put on your CV, for example.
W: I see. And I meant to ask, does it cost anything to join? Is there a fee?
M: Yes, membership costs £5 for a term but you can save a bit of money if you pay for the whole academic year. Then it’s only £12, instead of £15. That doesn’t include special trips. But they’re subsidized by the university, so they’re not too expensive.
W: Fine. How do I go about joining?
M: OK. So could I have your name, please?
W: Maria Lanzerac.
M: Right. Where are you from, Maria? I should be able to tell from your accent, but...
W: Don’t worry. Most people think I’m from Australia but I’m actually South African.
M: Fantastic. Well, I think that’s all I need for now. You should get the pack in the post tomorrow. Just give me a call if you’ve got any questions.
W: Thanks. Bye.

1 Jennifer Jenkins is a lecturer of _____ Linguistics.
2 International English is said to be English spoken mainly by _____ speakers across the world.
3 The sound [θ] or [ð] would be _____ out in International English.
4 _____ is the most important factor in International English according to Jennifer Jenkins.
5 More and more people are learning International English because they have a _____ that they actually have rather less to do.
M: I’ve come to Kings College, London, to talk to Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, who’s a Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics. Now Jennifer, you’re quite interested in the teaching and learning of International English. Can you explain in general terms what this is?
W: It’s based on the fact that nowadays the majority of people who speak English around the world are nonnative speakers of English—they’ve learnt it as a second or subsequent language. They use it to speak with each other and therefore, they’re not really learning what’s always been called English as a foreign language—English to speak to native speakers of English. They’re learning it for more international communication, and that has all sorts of implications for the sorts of things that they need to be able to do.
M: So, what would be the main differences between the kind of English that’s widely taught around the world today, and perhaps what you describe as a more international form?
W: Well, there’d be various differences. There’d be differences in what they need to be able to do when they’re pronouncing English.
M: Is there anything that’s widely taught when teaching English that would be missed out in International English?
W: Yes, I think, for example, that... there doesn’t seem to be much point in teaching learners to say the T-H, the [θ] and [ð] sounds, erm, because most of the world’s learners of English, speakers of English who are non-native speakers don’t pronounce the [θ].
M: And, what is the thinking behind the idea of International English?
W: Well, the more different groups of people round the world speak English, the more important it becomes to make sure that they have enough in common so that they can understand each other, that they’re intelligible to each other and here, pronunciation is very important because their pronunciation is the thing that will vary most, among different speakers of English.
M: So, what would you say are the advantages for students and teachers of this form of English?
W: Well, one advantage would be that they actually have rather less to do, rather less to learn because instead of trying to learn the entire way of speaking of a native speaker, which is incredibly complicated and most learners never do achieve this in any case, so they’ve got less to do, but they’re also allowed to keep something of themselves in their English.
M: Well, Dr. Jenkins, thank you for talking to me about that.
1 Applied
2 non-native
3 missed
4 Pronunciation
5 advantage

1 The teenagers are made to listen to orchestras because they play _____ rock music which disturbs the neighbors.
2 The landlord was ordered to live in his own building for a _____.
3 The speakers thought the special punishment was too _____.
4 The woman hided in the _____ room during the gym class.
5 The woman still _____ the gym class after being punished.
W: Hey, listen to this. “A judge in Minnesota has sentenced some young people to listen to orchestras playing love songs.”
M: What?
W: As a punishment. For playing loud rock music.
M: Why? How is that a punishment?
W: They were playing some kind of loud music—rock, or rap or something—in their cars. It was disturbing the neighbors, who called the police. So the judge gave them a choice between paying a fifty-dollar fine or listening to the style of music that they most disliked. It says here, “The judge sees her method as an effective way to make the teenagers consider their crime. ‘If they are making people listen to their music, I will make them listen to mine,’ she said.”
M: Hah! I think that’s a good idea.
W: I suppose so. Actually... I don’t know if it would really be effective.
M: Well, it might make them see things from other people’s point of view.
W: Yes. I guess that’s why she did it.
M: It’s like that “landlord story” a few weeks ago.
W: What was that about?
M: Well, this guy was in court because he was renting apartments that were in terrible condition—no heat, no water, or anything. His building was a mess. So the judge ordered him to live in his own building for a while.
W: Wow! Good idea!
M: He said he should experience the same conditions. And also, if he was living in it, it would ensure that the repairs got done.
W: It’s better than going to prison.
M: Yes. Well, he could have gone to prison, otherwise. But this was a more practical solution.
W: Prison wouldn’t have been as effective. At least this way, the repairs probably got done.
M: I agree. It seems more logical to make the punishment fit the crime.
W: I had a teacher once who believed in that idea.
M: Really?
W: When I was in seventh grade, I hated gym class, and I always tried to get out of it. My friend and I used to hide in the locker room during class. Well, eventually we were caught.
M: What happened?
W: We had to go to the library and do a whole project on physical fitness. We had to get statistics. For example, how many people in the population are overweight, why exercise is good for you.., things like that. And we had to do it during gym class. Then we had to present it to the class.
M: That’s really good. I bet you learned a lot.
W: Yes, I learned a lot, but I still hated gym?
1 loud
(对话中提到“As a punishment. For playing loud rock music”,“It was disturbing the neighbors, who called the police. So the judge gave them a choice between paying a fifty-dollar fine or listening to the style of music that they most disliked”,可知这些年轻人玩摇滚打扰了邻居,作为惩罚,法官让这些年轻人选择交50元的罚款还是听一种他们不喜欢的音乐,这些年轻人选择了听不喜欢的音乐。
2 while
3 logical
Good idea!”,“It seems more logical to make the punishment fit the crime”,可以看出两人认为特殊惩罚是一个好办法。
4 locker
(女士在对话中说到“I hated gym class, and I always tried to get out of it.”,她不喜欢上体育课,总是想着逃避,因此“My friend and I used to hide in the locker room during class.”,可以知道女士经常藏在上锁的房间,由此可知正确答案。)
5 hated
(在对话的最后一句,女士说到“Yes, I learned a lot, but I still hated gym”,可以看出尽管女士从中学习了很多,但仍旧讨厌上体育课。

1 Angela Baker is a _____, whose book Emma is controversial.
2 Computer games won’t cause serious harm if played no more than _____ hours a day according to Angela Baker.
3 As a result of Emma’s playing computer games excessively, she dropped out of _____.
4 Emma phoned Angela from a _____ station.
5 Angela’s book centres around some _____ that Emma experienced.
M: I have with me in the studio today, Angela Baker, founding member of the pressure group arcade and writer of the recent controversial book Emma’s all right now. Angela, your book has been seen as criticizing computer games quite directly. Are these games really as bad as that?
W: I just want to make it clear, first of all, that I don’t see computer games themselves as the enemy that some people do. Most games can generally be played for up to 3 hours each day without causing any serious harm to the user.
M: But your book centres around some of the problems your daughter experienced that you claim were the result of playing a game called Bloodbath Ⅱ.
W: Yes, and our experience agrees with the result of a recent report that playing for more than five hours can often result in the player developing severe emotional problems.
M: Yes, Hoffman and Lake have especially pointed to the increased aggression that can be seen in subjects. But doesn’t your book just say the same things but less scientifically?
W: Well, yes, but our book is a true story of real people’s experiences. Emma did become more aggressive but what is important is that she cut herself off from her friends and teachers by physically attacking them. So here was a normal healthy fifteen-year-old girl with no friend who the school refused to accept.
M: And how did you react at this point?
W: Well, of course I was very worried and I knew I had to do something. And looking back, perhaps I did the wrong thing.
M: That was when you destroyed her home computer.
W: Well, like I say, I was going out of my mind. She would just sit down and play and not speak to me. So, in the end, one day, I picked up the computer and threw it out of the window.
M: And that’s when Emma ran away from home?
W: Yes, she just walked out of the house right afterwards and I didn’t hear from her for three weeks. Next thing we heard, she was in a police station in Brighton. She telephoned us from there, and said she wanted to come home.
M: That must have been quite a difficult moment for you.
W: Well, yes, hut the important thing was that she was willing to talk and start sorting out her problems.
M: And is Emma all right now?
W: She’s a totally new person. She’s made up with her friends and started studying for her A-level again but moat importantly she realized that Bloodbath Ⅱ and other such games were responsible for ruining her friendship and her studies.
M: So she doesn’t play any more.
W: Well, naturally all computer games are right out of the question now, hut after a year or so I went out and got her a new computer to help her with her studies and I’m really delighted that now she can make positive use of computers.

5 problems
(对话中男士提到“But your book centres around some of the problems your daughter experienced that you claim were the result of playing a game called Bloodbath Ⅱ.”,可以看到Angela的书主要是关于她女儿经历的一些问题,Angela将这些问题归因于她女儿玩一种叫Bloodbath Ⅱ的游戏。

1 The woman in this conversation is a _____ worker.
2 The principle of “Assistance Pyramid” means that _____ goods must be top priority on all occasions.
3 The ICRC identified priorities in a region to provide the best possible _____.
4 The _____ is a problem in areas hit by natural disasters because of pollution.
5 According to the woman, the relief workers of ICRC are all strongly _____ by humanitarian work.
M: Today we welcome Alvaro Solomou, one of the 1,200 relief workers with the ICRC, who is going to talk about the ICRCS approach to giving assistance. Welcome to the programme, Alvaro.
W: Hello, thank you for inviting me.
M: Alvaro, can you tell us about how the ICRC assists victims of famine and drought, and other natural disasters?
W: Well, we should remember that all too often natural disasters happen in areas where there’s already some other sort of problems, such as economic crisis, or a period of political instability. We’re the only agency to get through the front lines and deliver aid to where it’s most needed. We usually offer tents, water, and sanitation kits to the refugees. Where necessary, we charter helicopter to get supplies to villages in remote areas. Winter survival packs contain the best combination of food, blankets and plastic sheeting needed to get a refugee family through the winter.
M: I imagine that different contexts also create extra problems, how’s that done?
W: We use what’s called the ‘Assistance Pyramid’. This establishes that preference must be given in any relief situation to the foundations of the pyramid, in other words, to food, water, and essential goods, before anything else is done.
M: What about health care? Isn’t that a priority?
W: Hygiene and medical care take second and third places in the pyramid.
M: Does the ICRC only assist when there’s a crisis?
W: No, not at all. In fact, in recent years it has been the policy to provide help in developing countries once a crisis has passed, or even before one has occurred.
M: How’s that actually done?
W: Well, for example, the ICRC identifies priorities in a region in order to provide the best possible assistance.
M: Isn’t it true that millions of people across the world have difficulties gaining access to water?
W: Oh yes, that’s absolutely true, and of course in many places the water that’s available is actually extremely unhealthy, and may carry waterborne disease. The ICRC has a programme of assistance which includes construction, engineering and providing access to water, along with hygiene and environmental protection, thus ensuring that water is clean and safe to use.
M: Is it dangerous working for the ICRC?
W: Well, in any crisis situation there’re dangers, but all of us are strongly motivated by humanitarian work, hopefully we can all cope with stress and the pressures which are bound to exist.
M: Alvaro, thank you for giving us such an interesting insight into the work of the ICRC.

Interviewee (I): Good news and bad news.
Reporter (R): You know, it seems like every month, I interview someone like you on the first Friday of the month, and they say, good news, bad news.
I: That’s right. There’s a reason for that, the good news, 200,000 jobs in a month added. That’s great. The bad news, the level of pain out there has not changed. There’s still about 20 million people who are either umemployed, working part time, but would like full-time jobs, or not in the labor force, but would like to be in the labor force. That number is just stable, and it’s a lot of pain.
R: The unemployment rate stayed constant, but that’s because we added 200,000 jobs, added 200,000 people to the labor force.
I: That’s right. But think of the population and think of the number of people in the population who are working. That tells you how healthy the economy is, how good the job market is. That number plummeted in the recession, and has barely climbed back up. We’re not at pre-recession on levels.
R: Indeed the so-called employment-to-population ratio has been below 60 percent for five years now, down almost one-seventh from the ratio pre-recession, to a low last seen in the Reagan recession of the early 80’s. Now, the economy is adding jobs. In fact, May marked a milestone. Five years after the end of the great recession, we have finally regained the nearly nine million jobs that were lost. But Osterman, who has researched the quality of the new jobs, says they represent no progress in wages for the economy as a whole.
I: Twenty to 25 percent of all adults who are working are in poverty level jobs, jobs that if they worked full-time, full year, wouldn’t raise them above 125 percent of the poverty rate for a family of three.
R: In May, for example, some of the biggest job gains were in health care. Seems promising. Yet many of those jobs are low-paying.
I: Health care is very bifurcated, polarized industry. You have got the doctors and nurses at the top. You have got the home health care aides. You have got CNAs, the certified nursing assistants, at the bottom. These bottom jobs are going to grow immensely because of the retirement of the baby boom, because of the demand for home health care. And so a growth in health services, while expected, doesn’t necessarily lead to better jobs at all.
R: “Consider the entire economy”, say Osterman, “and what the average job has been paying.”
I: If you look at wage growth in the economy, over the last 12 months, it’s been about 2.1 percent. That’s barely ahead, barely ahead of inflation, so people are not going ahead in terms of their earnings in this recovery.
由被访者的话“But think of the population and think of the number of people in the population who are working. That tells you how healthy the economy is”可知,他们看到的是相对比例,整个人口中有正式工作的人数所占比例相对较高,所以他们认为经济发展稳定。
2 C 根据录音中谈到employment-to-population ratio(就业与人口比例)的地方可知,该比例已经连续五年在60%以下,由“down almost one-seventh from the ratio pre-recession, to a low last seen in the Reagan recession of the early 80’s”可知,如此低的比例只在上一次的里根经济衰退时期出现过。
3 C 根据录音中的“...who has researched the quality of the new jobs, says they represent no progress in wages for the economy as a whole”可知,新的工作岗位的薪水并无任何改善。

B. She should take better care of herself when travelling.
C. She should learn to protect her right as a consumer.
D. Advertisements can not be trusted.
M: Well, how did your trip go? Paris, was it?
W: It was an absolute disaster. In fact, it was so bad, it was really quite hilarious. I saw this ad in the colour supplement which offered “weekend breaks with a difference to the glamour spots of Europe for less than it costs to stay at home”. Well, I suppose we should have been on our guard when we read the ad. It really was too good to be true.
M: What happened? Do tell me.
W: Well, to start with, the ad said we would travel by air direct from London to Pairs with a well-known airline and be met at the airport and then be taken by taxi to a luxury hotel with a view of Montmartre. Well, what it didn’t say was the flight was with an unknown charter company. We did leave from London, but we flew via Brussels where we hung around for two hours waiting for passengers on another obscure charter flight from Bucharest. We finally landed in Paris six hours after leaving London, only to discover that our personal taxi service had turned into a coach journey.
M: What about the hotel? Did it live up to expectations?
W: You must be joking! The ad promised luxury double bedrooms with adjoining bath and toilet in a three- star hotel overlooking a unique historic area of Paris, within walking distance of some of the city’s best hot spots.
M: Sounds wonderful.
W: Yeah, it was. The deception, I mean. It was a real fleapit. The sort you read about but never expect to see. “Luxury double bedroom with adjoining bath and toilet” translates as a glorified cupboard at the end of a dark corridor with one toilet and bath for the entire floor. The sheets hadn’t been changed and there were cigarette ends in the ashtrays. Not to mention no soap or towels.
M: What about the view? Was it overlooking a deserted railway line or something even more awful?
W: Even that would have been more interesting than brick wall we could see from the window, if you climbed on a chair, you could just see the top of the dome of Montomartre—which I suppose justified the “view of Montmartre”. And as for the hot spots, well, I’ll leave you to imagine what the neighborhood was like!
M: What did you do? Did you complain?
W: What could we do? We had no choice. It was terribly late when we got there. No, we decided to put up with the hotel and go out to the town. So we called a taxi and went to a restaurant in the Latin Quarter. And then we went to a nightclub and stayed there until the early hours. When we got back to the hotel, we were so tired that we didn’t notice our surroundings. We checked out at ten and moved into a decent place for the following night.
M: So you did have a good time in the end. But I suppose it cost a lot more.
W: An absolute fortune. But we’ve put in a complaint and we’re trying to get our money back.
1 A 本题的关键是理解录音开头女士提到的“I saw this ad in the colour supplement...”,colour supplement (尤指报纸周末版的)彩色增刊,因此答案选A。
2 C 录音中女士指出他们确实从伦敦乘坐飞机出发,同时提到“...but we flew via Brussels where we hung around for two hours waiting for passengers on another obscure charter flight...”,由此可知女士所乘坐飞机在Brussels中途停留的原因是为了搭载另一航班上的乘客。
4 C 对话中女士说她和丈夫到达旅馆后已经相当晚了,所以就叫了一个出租车,去吃了晚饭,然后就“went to a nightclub and stayed there until the early hours”,由此可知C项正确。
5 D 录音开女士便提到“I suppose we should been on our guard when we read the ad. It really was too good to be true”,由此可知女士从中得出的教训是“广告不可信”,故答案选D项。

W: Hello.
M: Hi, Erica? Tim here.
W: Oh, hi, Tim. Helen said you might ring. You’re going to Australia, right? And you wanted some information about tours of the Sydney Opera House?
M: That’s right.
W: I got a printout from the Opera House website. Let me just get it…right. Opera House Tour. OK. It says: “This is our most popular tour…” blah blah. “Visitors are given a fascinating account of the history and architecture of the building.” You see the concert hall, the opera theatre, you hear about the current programme, et cetera. What else do you need to know?
M: Does it say how often the tour goes?
W: Let me see…it’s a one-hour tour and, yes, “it leaves every half hour between 9 a.m. and to 5 p.m.”
M: Right, every half hour. So they’re pretty frequent. And does it say how much the tour costs?
W: I think so, yes, at the bottom here—adults…23 dollars. But there’re some concessionary rates for, um, senior citizens, and also full-time students, plus kids under 16. So remember to take your student card and you’ll only have to pay 16 dollars. Oh, it also says something here about the backstage tour, “An opportunity to explore behind the scenes at the Opera House. Appear on the stage and see where the orchestra plays.” You also get the chance to chat with some of the technical staff and maybe even some performers, if you are lucky...
M: Sounds really great, but how long does that one take?
W: Um, that’s two hours, so twice as long as the first one. But there’s an early start—it goes at 7 a.m.
M: How much is that?
W: Let me see…150 dollars. Well, anyway, if you’re interested, you’d try and book well in advance if you can. I think the tours get quite booked up.
M: OK.
W: There’s a number you can call for bookings or if you want some information. Have you get a pen handy?
M: Yeah. Fire away.
W: OK. It’s 92507250. That’s Sydney, obviously. Did you get that?
M: Got it. That’s brilliant. Erica. Thanks a lot.
1 D 对话中女士指出“you wanted some information about tours of the Sydney Opera House?”,得到男士的肯定回答后,女士提到“I got a printout from the Opera House website”,接着便介绍了该资料上的信息,因可知女士是从网站上获得关于Opera House tour的信息的。
2 C 女士在向男士介绍从网站上获得的信息时,读到“This is our most popular tour...”,随后男士问及“Does it say how often the tour goes”,女士回答中提到“it’s a one-hour tour...”。
3 B 对话中男士问及门票价格,根据女士回答中提到的“But there’re some concessionary rates for, um, senior citizens, and also full-time students, plus kids under 16”,可知对于老年人、全日制学生和16岁以下的孩子,门票都有优惠。concessionary(对某类人)减价的。
4 A 在介绍完票价后,女士提到资料上还有backstage tour的相关内容,介绍说“An opportunity to explore behind the scenes at the open House. Appear on the stage and see where the orchestra plays”,因此A项为正确答案。

D. Banning alcohol drinking on all social occasions.
5 What does “binge-drinking” in the conversation most probably mean?
A. Free drinking.
B. Expensive drinking.
C. Moderate drinking.
D. Excessive drinking.
Reporter (R): First of all, we have known that excessive drinking has different costs on society. It’s often a tragedy for the family or the loved ones of the disease, but what surprised you about these numbers in the study?
Interviewee (I): Well, Hari, you are right, we have known that excessive alcohol use is a huge public health problem for a long time. What surprised us in this study was the extent to which that public health impact was focused on working-age adults. And as you noted in your opener, we estimate that about one in 10 deaths among working-age adults, ages 20-64 years, are attributable to excessive alcohol use. That’s a huge number and certainly indicates to us that we need to redouble our efforts to prevent it.
R: So this study also said that—other statistic that reached out to me was the fourth leading cause of death attributable to excessive drinking. How do we define excessive?
I: Well, excessive alcohol use is a sort of an umbrella term that we use for various patterns of alcohol consumption and also for drinking among certain high-risk groups. So under the umbrella, we would include binge-drinking, which is, for a woman, consuming four or more drinks on an occasion that is within a short period of time, for men, five or more drinks within an occasion that is again within a short period of time, basically drinking to the point of acute intoxication. And then any alcohol consumption by groups that we know to be at particularly high risk of harms from alcohol consumption, specifically underage youth, that is youth under age 21, and pregnant women.
R: And what are these factors that influence that? Does it happen more among males, more among young people?
I: Well, there certainly are some important differences across different population groups. And yes, we know that men tend to binge-drink more than women. The prevalence, as we call it, the proportion of people who report binge-drinking is higher in younger-age groups, 18-24, but also 25-34. But it’s important to recognize that this really is an important public health problem across the lifespan. But it’s also a very expensive problem for all of us. And, as you noted in your opening, we estimate the economic cost of excessive drinking at about $224 billion a year. And a large proportion of that cost, about $2 out of every $5, is paid for by government. So, essentially, all of us are paying the cost of excessive alcohol use.
R: And the results of this survey are self-reported. So is there a possibility that the numbers you’re talking about could even be higher?
I: Absolutely. The estimates that we reported in our study, which, again, are deaths that are attributable to excessive alcohol use, are calculated in a variety of different ways, but part of that calculation does involve self-reports of alcohol consumption by individuals. And we know that people tend to significantly under-report their alcohol consumption.
R: So what do we know about policies or practices that change consumption behavior? What works?
I: From a public perspective, policies that relate to the price and availability of alcohol are among those that we think can be most impactful in reducing excessive alcohol consumption.
1 B 根据录音中被访者的回答“What surprised us in this study was the extent to which that public impact was focused on the working age adults”可知,这项研究最令人惊讶的地方在于,过量饮酒对成年劳动力的影响。
由“then any alcohol consumption by groups that we know to be at particular high risk of harms from alcohol consumption, specially underage youth, that is youth under age 21, and pregnant women”可知,不满21岁的未成年人和孕妇为高风险人群。
3 A 在回答实际人们的饮酒量是否有可能比数据要高时,被访者答道“we know that people tend to significantly under-report their alcohol consumption”,即他认为是有可能的,因为人们总是会明显少报自己的饮酒量。
4 A 在回答是否有改变人们饮酒行为的政策时,被访者回答“politics that relates to the price and availability of alcohol are among those that we think can be most impactful in reducing excessive alcohol consumption”,即调整酒的价格,限制酒的销售是最有效的方法。
其中第一次出现是在解释过量饮酒(excessive drinking)时,因此,由“excessive alcohol use is a sort of an umbrella term that we used for various patterns of alcohol consumption…we would include binge-drinking”可知,答案为D项。

W: Predictions are dire that, by the end of this century, more than half of the world’s 6,000 languages will be gone. With today’s program we’re trying to explore tongues around the globe at risk of being lost forever and what is lost with them.
M: Each of these languages holds a little piece of information or a lot of information. And that’s information that, if you lose the language, you lose that connection with that place, with that way of thinking, with tens of thousands of years of that language’s lineage.
W: So what leads to the loss of some languages?
M: One cause of the loss of languages, of course, lives around the globe increasingly interconnected through technology, the economy, and the dominance of a few languages, including online.
W: Then what are the few dominant languages?
M: Well, it seems English, Mandarin and Spanish are gobbling up languages, as people decide they need to have this in order to assimilate into a culture.
W: What’s the key to a language surviving?
M: A language survives if you have the choice to learn it, if it’s available for you to live your life in some way with your language as part of you. In Wales, you have a choice of whether to go to an English medium school or to a Welsh medium school. And in this way, children can learn in the language that they are speaking at home.
W: But couldn’t you make the argument that it would be better if we all spoke the same language, that we all understood each other?
M: Well, language is the way we think. And it’s the way it’s been handed down through generations. If you begin to think in another language, that’s fine. But if you have to lose the way that your family has been speaking, that’s not so fine. That’s losing who you are. And when we lose who we are, that’s when we become this homogenized consumer of life, rather than a citizen who comes from a place and knows who you are.

1 What may the idea of a cheap, safe source of electricity soon become with the advancement of technology?
2 What will collect the electricity energy from the Sun?
3 How long will the solar powered satellites involved take to orbit the earth?
4 In what way do the solar-powered satellites produce electricity extremely efficiently?
5 How should the Micro Waves be operated to assure that people and the environment are both safe?
For many people, electricity is a vital part of everyday life and is often taken for granted, but not everyone has access to it. Improving the supply and availability of electricity across the world has challenged scientists for decades. Now, however, (1) technological advances mean that a cheap, safe source of electricity may soon be available virtually anywhere on the planet.
The idea is to harness the sun’s energy using satellites. Of course, solar powered satellites are not a new idea. They were first thought of over 30 years ago, in fact, but it is only relatively recently that technology has advanced tar enough to make the idea a practical possibility. The basic idea is that the solar powered satellites will convert the energy in sunlight into electricity. (2) The energy will be beamed to Earth in the form of microwaves, which will be collected by a device known quite simply as a microwave collector . A re-conversion plant will then turn the energy harnessed by the microwave collectors into electricity, ready for distribution.
(3) The solar powered satellites involved will take just 90 minutes to orbit the earth. (4) They are able to produce electricity extremely efficiently with less absorption and scattering of radiation . Each solar powered satellite used for harvesting solar energy will be only 200 meters long and also very light in weight. These advantages will make launching them into orbit much cheaper.
As there is no night time in space, it will be possible to generate electricity virtually 24 hours a day. Scientists are anxious to reassure people about the safety of microwaves. After all, many of us have seen what microwave ovens can do to food. And there are definitely some health issues to consider. However, (5) if the Micro waves operate at the correct frequencies, scientists assure us that people and the environment should both be safe.
1 It may be available worldwide.
(录音第一段最后一句提到“technological advances mean that a cheap, safe source of electricity may soon be available virtually anywhere on the planet.”,即技术进步意味着,一种廉价、安全的电能来源可能很快就会出现在地球上几乎任何地方。)
2 Microwave collector.
(录音第二段倒数第二句提到“The energy will be beamed to Earth in the form of microwaves, which will be collected by a device known quite simply as a microwave collector.”,即能量将以微波的形式发射到地球上,由一个简单的微波收集器收集。)
3 90 minutes.
(录音第三段第一句提到“The solar powered satellites involved will take just 90 minutes to orbit the earth.”,即太阳能卫星环绕地球一周仅需90分钟。)
4 Less absorption and scattering.
(录音第三段第二句提到“They are able to produce electricity extremely efficiently with less absorption and scattering of radiation.”,即它们发电效率高,但对辐射的吸引和散射极低。)
5 At the correct frequencies.
(录音最后一段最后一句提到“if the Micro waves operate at the correct frequencies, scientists assure us that people and the environment should both be safe.”,即科学家向我们保证,如果微波在正确的频率下工作,人和环境都应该是安全的。)

1 What does this monologue mainly talk about?
2 What is the common sensation of being successful?
3 Why do people make excuses for not taking chances?
4 What kinds of fear does success bring?
5 How can people overcome fear of success according to the speaker?
I’d like to tell you a little about myself first. I started out with nothing more than an inflated idea of my own ability and a lot of hope—but I’m now chairman of the Carocan Group, a multi-national company. (1) So how did I get to be successful? That’s what I’m going to talk about today.
We’ve all got our own definition of being successful. (2) The actual achievements may be very different but the sensation is almost the same, and it’s a very sweet and profound one, accomplishing whatever we set out to do. But most people don’t feel that sensation as often as they’d like to—because of fear. I’m going to talk about those fears, in particular the fear of failure and the fear of success. The fear of failure is easy to understand—and sometimes it can, paradoxically, be a motivator as well as a drawback. (3) People make many excuses for not taking chances—not enough time, family commitments, too much work—and all these are probably based on a subconscious doubt about their ability to actually succeed . But by not trying at all, people never know how much they can or can’t do. So my advice is to admit your fear and meet it head-on. Get your friends around you, and decide that whatever happens, the experience will teach you something, and you will come out of it stronger than before.
The fear of success is more difficult to deal with; once you’re successful, you have further to fall. (4) Success brings with it fear of the unknown, because after all you’ve never done it before and the reactions of those around you are unpredictable. These reactions may include jealousy, resentment. (5) But I can make one suggestion to you for overcoming this fear of success—think ahead. By anticipating the effects in this way you become better able to manage the fear of success. Finally, success is only worth it if we can enjoy it. There is no such thing as luck—success happens when you take advantage of opportunities that come your way, as I did and I can look back with pleasure on all I have achieved. Thank you for your time—and good luck to you all.

3 The subconscious doubt of ability.
4 The fear of the unknown.
5 Think ahead.

1 How did people distinguish values of coins at first?
2 Why did governments start to use paper receipts?
3 Where did paper money first appear?
4 What is the advantage of “the euro”?
5 What is the smallest coin made of?
Today, currency is a mixture of coins and paper money. But it wasn’t always that way. Before people had metal coins and paper bills, they used a lot of unusual things for money. In one part of the world, for example, people used sharks’ teeth for money. In some places, brightly colored feathers and rare seashells were money. People in one area even used the hair from elephants’ tails for money.
No one knows for sure when people started using metal coins for money. The oldest coins are over 2,500 years old, so we know that people used coins a very long time ago. At first, people used precious metals, such as gold and silver, to make coins. (1) They stamped the shape of a person or animal on each coin to indicate its value.
(3) In the 13th century, people in China used iron coins for their currency. These coins weren’t worth very much, and people had to use many of them to buy things. (2) Because it was inconvenient to carry so many coins, the government started making paper receipts. People took these receipts to banks and traded them for coins. (3) This was the first example of paper money.
Today, most countries use a mixture of coins and paper bills for their currency. In the United States, the paper bills are all the same size and color. For example, the $1 bill is the same size and color as the $100 bill. In many other countries, the bills have different sizes and colors. The smaller bills are worth less money. This makes it easier for people to tell the value of their money.
In 2002, twelve European countries started using a completely new currency. (4) It’s called “the euro”. Many Europeans miss their old currencies, but now it’s easier to move money from one country to another.
Here are a few more fascinating facts about the history of money.
Feathers were the lightest money ever used. People on the Pacific island of Santa Cruz used them. Stones were the heaviest money ever used. People on the Pacific island of Yap used them. Some weighed over 500 pounds.
(5) The smallest money ever used was in Greece. The coins were made of metal, but they were smaller than an apple seed.
1 By the stamps on them.
2 Carrying many coins is inconvenient.
3 In China.
4 Help move money across countries.
5 Metal.
