Critical thinking is a kind of thinking in which you question, analyze, interpret, evaluate and make a judgement about what you read, hear, say, or write. Applying critical thinking does not mean being negative or focusing on faults. It means being able to clarify your thinking so that you can break down a problem or a piece of information, interpret it and use that interpretation to arrive at an informed decision or judgement. Researchers define critical thinking as a set of six skills and subskills including:
1) Interpretation—categorizing, decoding significance, and classifying meaning;
2) Analysis—examining ideas, identifying arguments, and analyzing arguments;
3) Evaluation—assessing claims and assessing arguments;
4) Inference—questioning evidence, thinking of alternatives, and drawing conclusions;
5) Explanation—stating results, justifying procedures, and presenting arguments;
6) Self-regulation—self-examination and self-correction.
In a class, if the teacher wants to teach students critical thinking, give them opportunities to brainstorm and analyze things. Classroom discussion is a great way to encourage open-mindedness and creativity. Teach students to ask “why?” as much as possible.
