2.1 Registration Contents and Collection Methods

Cancer registration serves to maintenance of a file or register of all cancer cases occurring in a defined population in which the personal demographic information of cancer patients, the clinical and pathological characteristics of the cancers and prognostic and survival status are documented.Usually, all primary malignant tumors, benign and unknown behaviour tumors of central nervous system(including brain and spinal cord) are reportable.

2.1.1 Incidence Data

At present, both passive and active data collection methods are adopted, with passive data collection as the principal. The main source is all sorts of hospitals, but for purpose of maximizing completeness of registration, other supplementary sources including grass-roots medical and healthcare institutions, health insurance system, cancer screening programmes and death certificates are also used.

All medical institutions with qualification for cancer diagnosis and treatment within the catchment of cancer registration should undertake cancer reporting. All primary malignant tumors, benign and unknown behaviour tumors of central nervous system (including brain and spinal cord) are reportable. For each incident cancer case, mandatory items include name, sex, date of birth, ID Number, address, occupation, cancer diagnosis, histological type, initial diagnosis date, basis of diagnosis, etc.

2.1.2 Mortality Data

Mortality data are obtained from two sources: death registration system and periodical active follow-ups of prevalent cancer cases. Cancer mortality data should collect items of information as recorded on death certificates.

2.1.3 Survival Data

Cancer registry routinely carries out passive and active follow-ups, firstly, to verify cancer patients’ demographic information and secondly, to obtain their survival status and detailed mortality information, if found deceased.

2.1.4 Population Data

Demographic data comprise the total population and population stratified by sex and age. Midyear population is used as an estimate of the total population that year. The data are provided by the public security bureau and the bureau of statistics. zHVbOTG84v/5RjiUuljujOqgiJOuGWecnU5m6Dcx3SaFWG5Gx7g7HZSMKpvTFUNa
