野外识别 │ 繁殖羽上体沙褐色，眼周金黄色，胸前有完整的胸带，具宽阔黑色贯纹（眼罩），额中央有白色斑块，头顶前方的黑色带上有一条白纹。非繁殖羽，各处黑色标记由褐色标记取代，胸带亦偏褐色。

居留及分布 │ 在欧亚大陆和非洲低地广泛分布。在中国华北地区为夏季繁殖鸟，在东南沿海地区为冬候鸟，西南地区有少数留鸟种群。在南岭为冬候鸟，不易见到，在秤架和乳阳有记录。

生境及习性 │ 栖息于湖泊和河流的岸边、草地、农田、沼泽地带，以及海滨。常单只或成小群活动。常活动于水边沙滩或沙石地，边走边觅食。主要吃鳞翅目、鞘翅目和其他种类的昆虫及其幼虫，以及蠕虫、蜘蛛、甲壳类、软体动物等小型无脊椎动物。繁殖期 5—7 月。巢多置于水边沙地或沙石地上，非常简陋，巢内无任何内垫物，或有少许枯草。窝卵数 3~5 枚，卵梨形、沙黄色，被褐色斑点。

Field identification │ A small plover with a complete breast band, a narrow white hindneck collar, conspicuous yellow eye-ring, grey bill, yellowish legs, and no obvious wingbar in flight. The upperparts are mainly sandy brown and the underparts are white. On summer-plumaged adults, the lores, ear coverts, frontal bar and breast band are all black, contrasting strongly with the white forehead,supercilium, throat and sides of the neck. On winter-plumaged birds and immatures, the black is replaced by brown or is obscure.

Distribution & status │ Very widely distributed from Europe and N Africa east to Asia. The subspecies curonicus occurs throughout much of China, as a summer visitor in the north and northeast and throughout the year in the south. In Nanling, it is an uncommon passage migrant, recorded at Chengjia and Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Little Ringed Plovers occur singly, in pairs or in flocks on sand, mud or gravel near water, where they forage, sometimes using foot-trembling, for insects and their larvae,worms, spiders, crustaceans, molluscs and other small invertebrates. They nest in Guangdong on open sandy or shingly areas near water from April to July.
