野外识别 │ 眉纹灰白色，头顶至后颈黑褐色，羽缘浅褐色。上体橄榄褐色，具黑色纵纹。颏白色，头侧至胸石板灰色，两胁和尾下覆羽黑褐色且有白色横纹。雌鸟体羽颜色较暗。亚成鸟翼上覆羽具不明晰的白斑。

居留及分布 │ 分布于欧亚大陆、非洲等地，国内分布广泛。在南岭为留鸟，数量少，不易看见，在乳阳有记录。

生境及习性 │ 栖息于低地沼泽、水塘、河流、湖泊、水田、红树林等水域岸边植被茂密处，性隐匿，常单独于夜间或晨昏活动，在烂泥地觅食。杂食性，主要取食浅水和泥地的鱼类、甲壳类、软体动物、昆虫，以及植物的嫩枝、种子及果实等。繁殖期 5—7 月。在芦苇沼泽地上营巢。窝卵数 6~9 枚，卵淡棕色。

Field identification │ A slender rail with a long reddish, slightly downcurved bill, heavily streaked olive-brown upperparts, and prominent black and white barring on the vent and undertail coverts. The face is slaty-blue with a diffuse dark eye-stripe, and the breast greyish, often with brown streaks.

Distribution & status │ Breeds from east Siberia through Mongolia and northeast China to Korea and Japan, and winters from northern India to southern China, Taiwan and southern Japan. In Nanling, it is recorded at Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Brown-cheeked Rails occur singly in winter and on passage in a variety of wetland habitats including marshes, reedbeds, vegetated ponds and streams, where they forage for worms, leeches, molluscs, shrimps, aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, amphibians, small fish and small mammals.
