野外识别 │ 头部和背部石板灰色，颏污灰色，喉灰白色。胸、上腹和两胁棕红色，下腹和尾下覆羽白色。飞羽黑褐色，内侧具白色横斑。翅上覆羽暗灰色。尾淡灰褐色，具宽阔的黑色次端斑和棕红色端斑。鸣声为“ eez-weet ”，重复多次。

居留及分布 │ 分布于中国南邻国家至马来群岛，北抵俄罗斯，东至日本及中国大陆的东部、南部等地，在南岭为夏候鸟，于秤架、乳阳有分布。

生境及习性 │ 栖息于山地常绿林和林缘灌丛地带。活动范围较大，没有固定的栖息地。性机警且胆怯，常躲在树上枝叶间反复鸣叫。主要以松毛虫、毛虫、尺蠖等昆虫为食。繁殖期 5—6 月。自己不营巢，将卵产于鸫和鹟等雀形目鸟类的巢中，卵褐色。繁殖数据缺乏。

Field identification │ A slender-bodied, medium-sized cuckoo with bluish-grey hood and upperparts, a whitish chin, whitish patches on the nape and tertials, and white underparts with extensive greyish-pink streaks. The tail is banded black and grey and narrowly tipped rufous and white. Recently-fledged juveniles have a full blackish hood, blackish upperparts and white underparts heavily spotted blackish. The territorial call of adults is a shrill, far-carrying two-note eez-weet .

Distribution & status │ Breeds from Nepal and the eastern Himalayas through Myanmar to southern China, including Guangdong, and winters south through Indochina to Sumatra, Borneo and Java. In Nanling, it is a summer visitor, recorded at Chengjia and Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Whistling Hawk Cuckoos occur singly or in pairs in a variety of wooded habitats including hill forests, where they forage for insects, especially caterpillars. Recently-fledged juveniles have been observed in Guangdong in July and August, with Hainan Blue Flycatcher and Small Niltava the host species.
