野外识别 │ 头灰色，背褐色，喉、上胸具栗色和暗灰色纵纹，下胸和腹具暗褐色横斑。尾具横斑。羽色略似雀鹰。鸣声为“ pwee pwee-ha ”，第二个音节较长和响亮、传播很远，重复5~10 次。

居留及分布 │ 分布于亚洲东南部及印度、中国大部分地区。国内在云南、海南等地为留鸟，其余多为夏候鸟。在南岭为夏候鸟、常见种，分布于秤架、大东山、龙潭角、大顶山、乳阳等地。

生境及习性 │ 主要栖息于山地森林中，常单独活动，多隐藏于树顶枝叶间。主要以昆虫为食。繁殖期 4—7 月。自己不营巢，常将卵产于喜鹊、钩嘴鹛等鸟类的巢中，卵为橄榄灰色、密布褐色细斑。

Field identification │ A large cuckoo whose plumage recalls Crested Goshawk. Adults have a grey crown and sides of the head, brown mantle and upperwing, grey tail with dark bands, and a white ground colour to the underbody which is marked by heavy dark rufous streaks on the breast and sides of the neck and brown bars on the lower breast, belly and flanks. On juveniles, the crown is streaked with white, the upperparts barred rufous and the underbody from the throat to the belly is spotted or streaked brown. The territorial call is a loud, penetrating pwee pwee-ha which is repeated and rises in pitch.

Distribution & status │ Breeds from the Himalayas through Myanmar east to China and south to Thailand, and winters from east India and Thailand south to Java and the Philippines; also resident on Sumatra and Borneo. The nominate subspecies is a summer visitor to parts of southern, central and eastern China, including Guangdong. In Nanling, it is a common summer visitor, recorded at Chengjia,Dadongshan, Longtanjiao, Dadingshan and Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Large Hawk Cuckoos occur in a wide variety of wooded habitats, where they feed mainly on insects, especially Lepidoptera larvae, locusts, Coleoptera insects and caterpillars. They are nest-parasitic, but the host species in Guangdong are unknown.
