Adults are glossy bluish-black overall except for the undertail coverts and outermost undertail feathers which are finely barred white. The territorial call is a loud clear 4-6 notes whistle which rises in tone (rendered in English as“I’m a drongo cuckoo”).
Distribution & status │ Breeds from eastern India through Myanmar and N Indochina to southern China, and presumably winters south, though the wintering quarters are unknown. Subspecies barussarum is a summer visitor to parts of southern and central China including Guangdong. In Nanling, it is a fairly common summer visitor, recorded at Chengjia, Dadongshan and Ruyang.
Habitat & habits │ Drongo Cuckoos occur singly or in pairs in a variety of wooded habitats including hill forests, where they forage for insects, especially caterpillars. They are nest-parasitic. Host species in Guangdong are unknown.
