野外识别 │ 雄鸟全身黑色，雌鸟全身灰褐色且具白色斑点。暗红色虹膜容易辨认。鸣声为“ ko-el ”，第二个音节较长和响亮、传播很远，重复5~10 次。

居留及分布 │ 分布于印度、中南半岛、印度尼西亚、澳大利亚和南太平洋中的岛屿。噪鹃华南亚种为中国北纬35°以南大多数地区的夏季繁殖鸟。在南岭为夏候鸟，在大顶山、乳阳有记录。

生境及习性 │ 栖息于海拔 1 000 m以下山地的茂密林中和村寨附近的高大树上。多单独活动，隐蔽在大树顶茂密的叶丛中，通常只能听其声音而不见其影。主要以榕树、芭蕉和无花果等植物的果实、种子为食，也吃小型昆虫及其幼虫。繁殖期 3—8 月。自己不营巢，通常把卵产于黑领椋鸟、喜鹊和红嘴蓝鹊等鸟类的巢中。繁殖数据缺乏。

Field identification │ A large, long-tailed cuckoo with a stout bill. Adult males are entirely glossy blue-black. Adult females have strongly barred tails, and are blackish-brown or greenish-brown spotted with white above, and whitish below, striped brown on the breast and barred brown on the belly, flanks and vent. Males call for long periods during the breeding season, a loud, frequently repeated ko-el which rises in tone.

Distribution & status │ Widely distributed in S Asia and Indochina east to China and south to Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the Philippines. The subspecies chinensis occurs in parts of southern,central and eastern China and is resident in southernmost areas and a summer visitor or passage migrant elsewhere. In Nanling, it is an uncommon summer visitor, recorded at Dadingshan and Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Common Koels occur in open woodland, often on the edge of farmland and rivers, and in orchards and urban parks. A large part of their diet consists of fruits and seeds, especially from banyans and other fig-trees; they also eat caterpillars, grasshoppers, beetles and other insects and their larvae. They are nest-parasitic. Known host species in Guangdong include Black-collared Starling,Common Magpie and Red-billed Blue Magpie.
