野外识别 │ 具显眼的黑色直立凤头冠羽，头后具白色领环，背、肩黑色且具蓝色光泽，翅栗红色，下体从颊至胸淡红褐色，长尾黑色且具端斑。亚成鸟上体具棕色鳞状纹，喉及胸偏白。鸣声为“ pee pee-pee pee ”双音节哨声。

居留及分布 │ 繁殖于印度、中国南部及中南半岛，迁徙至菲律宾及印度尼西亚。在南岭为夏候鸟，普遍易见。

生境及习性 │ 主要栖息于低山丘陵和山麓等开阔地带的疏林和灌木林中，也活动于园林中和宅旁树上。多单独或成对活动。主要以白蚁、毛虫、甲虫等昆虫为食，偶尔也吃植物果实。繁殖期 5—7 月。自己不营巢，通常将卵产于画眉、黑脸噪鹛和鹊鸲的巢中。繁殖数据缺乏。

Field identification │ A large, long-tailed cuckoo. Adults have a black head and prominent black crest, white hindcollar, black mantle and tail, chestnut-red wings, and mostly whitish underbody except for an orange-buff throat patch and blackish vent. Juveniles have a shorter, paler crest and pale buffy tips to the upperpart feathers. Calls include a repeated two-note metallic whistle pee pee and a rattling series of chu-hu-hu-hu-hu-hu notes.

Distribution & status │ Breeds from northern India to eastern China, and winters south to Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Borneo and Java. It is a summer visitor to parts of China, mainly south of the Yangtze and occasionally further north. In Nanling, it is a common summer visitor.

Habitat & habits │ Chestnut-winged Cuckoos occur, usually singly, in a variety of wooded habitats where they feed mainly on insects such as termites, caterpillars and beetles. They are nest-parasitic. Hwamei, Masked Laughingthrush, and Oriental Magpie Robin are known host species in Guangdong.
