野外识别 │ 头顶、背、翅为黑色或灰色，背上的马鞍形斑不明显。颏及喉偏灰，尾下覆羽白色，尾羽末端成针形。

居留及分布 │ 国外分布于印度的北部和西部、中南半岛、苏门答腊及爪哇西部。国内繁殖于海南岛、南沙群岛及西藏东南部。南岭较少见，见于乳阳。

生境及习性 │ 常在开阔地区和森林的上空飞翔，飞行的速度很快。主要在空中捕捉飞行性昆虫为食。营巢于岩石洞穴和树洞中。繁殖期 2—3 月。每窝产卵 3 枚。

Field identification │ Very similar to White-throated Needletail, and best separated by its throat patch, which is poorly defined on the lower edge and dusky-grey (not white). The lores are also plain.

Distribution & status │ Breeds patchily from central Nepal and northeast India through Myanmar south to Thailand and east to Hainan and Taiwan, and possibly also in other parts of southeast China, and winters south to the Malay Peninsula. In Nanling, it is an uncommon passage migrant,recorded at Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Silver-backed Needletails occur over a wide variety of habitats on migration but favour wooded habitats when breeding. They feed on flying insects, and are tree-hole nesters.
