Field identification │ A pale buff-brown nightjar with broad blunt wings and a long square-ended tail. The plumage markings are complex, but males are easily identified in flight by a conspicuous white band across the blackish wing-tips and broad white edges to the tail. Females show a buffier band across the wing-tips and lack white edges to the tail. The territorial call is distinctive—a loud, piercing, frequently repeated chweep .
Distribution & status │ Widely distributed in S and SE Asia east through Myanmar to southeast China and south to Sumatra, Borneo, Java and the Philippines, and mainly resident. The subspecies amoyensis occurs in southeast China including Guangdong. In Nanling, it is uncommon, recorded at Chengjia.
Habitat & habits │ Savanna Nightjars occur singly or in pairs (sometimes in larger numbers outside the breeding season) over open habitats, including grasslands, farmland, lightly vegetated hillsides, fishponds, river banks and reclamation sites. They roost quietly on the ground by day and are active at night, foraging for flying insects, especially moths, mantids, beetles and ants. In the breeding season, their flight is slow and quite low and they nest on open ground (occasionally flat roof-tops) in April-May in the region.
