野外识别 │ 头灰色，上体褐色，下体粉红色。后颈两侧有宽阔的黑色斑块，内布满白色圆形斑点。外侧尾羽黑色，具白色端斑；中央尾羽褐色，与上体同色，飞翔时可见，可作为种的分辨特征。常发出“ gu gu gu gu ”的鸣叫声。

居留及分布 │ 在亚洲南部、亚洲东南部及中国南方广大地区分布。在南岭为常见留鸟，在秤架、乳阳有分布，是保护区最为常见的斑鸠种。

生境及习性 │ 栖息于有稀疏树木生长的草坪、草地、低山丘陵和农田地带。常小群活动。主要以植物种子为食，特别是农作物种子，有时也吃蜗牛、昆虫等动物性食物。繁殖期3—7月。通常营巢于小树枝杈上或灌丛间，有时也会在山边岩石缝隙中营巢。窝卵数 2 枚，卵椭圆形、白色。

Field identification │ Similar in overall size to Oriental Turtle Dove, but slimmer and longer-tailed. Adults have a prominent black half-collar with dense white spots, a grey head, pinkish-brown body and rather plain brown mantle and wing-coverts. The tail is graduated and has white tips. Juveniles are duller and lack the neck spotting.

Distribution & status │ Widespread resident in Asia, from Pakistan east through Indochina to China and the Philippines. The nominate subspecies occurs in southern China and north to Gansu and Hebei. In Nanling, it is a fairly common resident, recorded at Chengjia and Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Spotted Doves occur singly or in loose flocks in grassy areas in the lowlands,especially farmland and urban parks, where they feed on a variety of seeds supplemented by snails,insects and other animal food. They breed almost throughout the year.
