野外识别 │ 雄鸟头部蓝灰色，后颈基部有一黑色领环，并延伸至颈两侧。上体、腹和覆羽葡萄红色，腰和尾蓝灰色近灰黑色，具宽阔的白色端斑。雌鸟蓝色不明显，整体偏土褐色。叫声为“ cru-u-u-u-u ”。

居留及分布 │ 分布于印度半岛和亚洲东南部，中国辽宁、河北以南的广大地区。在南岭为冬候鸟或过境鸟，在乳阳第一峰有记录。

生境及习性 │ 栖息于开阔的平原、田野、村庄、果园和山麓疏林及宅旁竹林地带，也出现于低山丘陵和林缘地带。常成对或成群活动，有时亦与山斑鸠和珠颈斑鸠混群活动。喜欢栖息于电线上或高大的枯枝上。主要以植物的浆果、种子和果实为食。繁殖期 2—8 月。营巢于乔木隐蔽的低枝上。窝卵数 8 枚左右，卵圆形、白色。

Field identification │ A small compact dove with a short tail. Males have a blue-grey head marked by a black band on the hindneck; the wing coverts are vinous-red, while the rump and tail are grey, the tail with broad white edges, and the underbody is pinkish. Females are similar in pattern to males but are brownish.

Distribution & status │ Distributed from India east to China and south to Thailand and the Philippines. The subspecies humilis is a summer visitor to northern and central China and occurs throughout the year south of the Yangtze. In Nanling, it is a rare passage migrant, recorded at Ruyang.

Habitat & habits │ Red Turtle Doves occur in flocks in open lowland habitats, including dry farmland, fishpond edges and urban parks. They feed on seeds.
