1996年，我在一家政府机关工作，待遇不错，可以分房，但由于无法适应机关生活，决意考研。当时仔细考虑自己的实际情况，生性自由散漫，也不适合公司工作，最喜欢做一名大学教师。由于从小倾慕北大，自幼喜爱古典文学，决定报考北大中文系古典文学专业，专攻魏晋隋唐文学方向，以后争取留校任教。当时并没在意，自己是跨城市、跨校、跨专业考研，难度极大。
1996年9月，我专程前往北大，咨询考研信息。中文系只提供专业课参考书，没有历年试卷，不提供导师联系方式，很是让人郁闷。目睹全国各地的莘莘学子前往中文系，立志考研，我压力不小，毕竟只是个人兴趣，从未专业学过。好在有位高中同学毕业于北大中文系，所以我贸然找到中文系研究生宿舍楼，寻找熟人。碰巧同学的朋友正在中文系读研，我了解了很多情况，准备报考钱志熙先生的硕士。钱先生是葛晓音教授的弟子、袁行霈教授的再传弟子，我仰慕已久。晚上我借宿于朋友的宿舍。
第二天上午，我在朋友的宿舍中偶然看到一份北大校报，上面有一则消息，引起了我的极大兴趣：1996年9月，国内第一个宗教学系——北大宗教学系成立了！我精神为之一振。当时我对于宗教的兴趣已经大于文学，感觉冥冥之中，命运在召唤我。经过深思熟虑，我决意转考北大宗教学系。好在我从小对于升官发财没有什么兴趣，计划硕士毕业后赴美读博，然后争取回北大任教。
我随即前往宗教学系了解相关情况，当时要考五门：英语、政治、马克思主义哲学、中西哲学史和宗教学原理。由于我本科学习英语，所以英语不用重点复习，难就难在专业课，因为从未接触过。北大宗教学系本是哲学系的一个专业，1996年独立成系，事实上还属于哲学系。国内传统上把宗教学作为哲学的一个分支来研究，而在国外，宗教学和哲学分庭抗礼。我一直认为，宗教类似于文学艺术，讲究感性和直觉；而哲学类似于理科，讲究理性和逻辑，两者大相径庭。宗教学的专业课以哲学为主，不是我的长项，又是一大难关。
我根据系里公布的参考书目，跑遍了北京各大书店，终于买全了所需书籍，包括赵光武先生的《辩证唯物主义和历史唯物主义》、北大中哲教研室所著的《中国哲学史》（两卷）、南开大学出版社出版的《西方哲学通史》（两卷）、吕大吉先生的《宗教学通论》等十多本书。
由于我是在职考研，工作很忙，只能利用业余时间复习。直到1996年12月，我才真正开始全面复习，每天晚上回到宿舍，挑灯夜战，非常辛苦。由于智商较低，迄今仍然不知所以。到考试时，专业课参考书看了一半都不到，满分500分，我考了254分的成绩。只有英语过了，其他四门全部挂掉，专业课平均三四十分，第一年考研以惨败告终。
考研失败了，单位也知道了。当时各地正在精简机构，由于我在那个单位学历最高，专业最对口，我想肯定不会是我。单位中有很多老同志，眼看就要退休了，我以为会有人提前退休。一天，领导找我谈话，问我是否知道要精简机构，我自然知道。领导告诉我，我们单位只有一个指标。我好奇地问是谁，领导严肃地说：“就是你。”我当时感觉犹如五雷轰顶，质问领导为何是我，领导说：“因为你工作态度不端正，又要考研。”我便无话可说。由于不喜欢机关工作，我在上班时经常看一些《太平广记》之类的闲书，还把英国作家劳伦斯的禁书《查特莱夫人的情人》翻译了三分之一，后来觉得出版可能性不大，全部销毁。
当时我决意考研，不想在机关混一辈子，便向单位请了半年假，回家复习。单位允许我带薪复习，但告诉我如果明年再考不上，工作也就没有了。我和父母压力都很大，好不容易大学毕业，找了一个还凑合的工作，眼看就要没了，而考研却并没有很大的把握。好在父母非常开明，并未表现出来。
1997年7月，我再次回到父母身边，面临第二次“高考”。7月至9月复习得还可以，不幸的是，到9月份，问题出现了。由于父母觉得我很艰苦，每天给我订了牛奶补充营养。我从小家中清苦，没有喝过牛奶。每天早上起床后，我一般不吃早饭，先空腹喝下一斤牛奶，偶尔吃个鸡蛋。喝到9月，胃开始出毛病了，每天腹胀，吃的东西完全无法消化，基本无法进食。
我和家人都很着急，去了很多医院，吃了各种胃药，效果甚微。由于进食不多，我每天靠牛奶补充养分。一边喝牛奶，一边吃药，复习效果很差。由于无法进食，大脑空空如也，每天只能学习短暂的四个小时，上午两个小时，下午两个小时，晚上只能看电视。很多考研的同学可能会羡慕我的“幸福”生活，但我当时看电视比学习痛苦多了。直到1998年考研结束之后的5月，我偶然在一份报纸上看到一则消息：很多东方人尤其是中国人的体内缺少一种酶，不像西方人，所以有的人不适合喝牛奶，可以喝酸奶。那时我才恍然大悟，戒了牛奶，胃才慢慢好转起来，可惜为时已晚。 有的时候，一件微不足道的小事可能会毁掉考研大业，对此我深有感触。
1997年9月直至考前，我都在巨大的精神压力和身体不适中度过。当时以为运动不够，所以每天早晚各散步两次。戴上耳机，徘徊在迷茫的街道上，熙熙攘攘，车水马龙，只有我深陷孤独的世界。我不知道第二年将面临什么样的结局，也不知道我的未来在哪里。
经过半年的复习，参考书终于基本看完。1998年3月，考研成绩下来了，315分，满分500。记得当年的及格线是310分，通过了！不幸的是政治只考了49分，而单科及格线是51分。我马上跑到北大研究生院，花了10元，递交了政治查分申请表。结果下来，老天助我，竟然查回来两分，政治变成了51分，终于及格了！当年北大宗教学系只录取一名硕士研究生，全国20多人报考，只有我一人过线。我打电话问学校，得到喜讯：“你被录取了！等复试通知吧！”我把喜讯告诉家里人，父母也很高兴，单位开始准备为我办理离职手续。
蹊跷的是，等到4月份，复试通知杳无音讯。我急忙打电话问学校，却被告知不能录取我了。忙问原因，说是一位同学报考西方哲学专业，考了345分，未被录取，所以转到宗教学专业，总分比我高，我不能上公费了，只能读自费或委培，学费两万八，没有生活费，住宿自理，共需五万左右。
我当时很是气愤，认为没有可比性。西哲和宗教学的专业课有两门完全不同，西哲考中国哲学史和西方哲学史，宗教学考中西哲学史和宗教学原理，包括佛教、道教、伊斯兰教、基督教史。我据理力争，学校严词拒绝。后来我才知道还有其他原因。我当即再次来到北大研究生院，咨询研招办负责人：这种情况应该录取谁？负责人说：“应该录取你。”不幸的是，另一位老师也在旁边。负责人又说：这种情况应该具体问题具体分析。
分析的结果，还是录取了另外一位同学。我对北大很失望，觉得后果很严重。我联系了全国所有重点大学的宗教学专业。人大、复旦、南大、中山等大部分学校都已招满，只有四川大学和上海社会科学院对我有兴趣。后来由于种种原因，四川大学也未能如愿，而上海社会科学院需要交一万八的费用。经过综合考量，我最终还是选择了北大，把工作四年积蓄的四万元花在了北大，还借了家里一万元。但我不后悔，如果上天再给我一次机会的话，我还会选择北大。 个人觉得：校园熏陶比具体专业对人的影响更为深远。
我在考研时，听过一首歌《爱自己》，那首歌伴我度过了最黑暗的考研岁月。最后，把那首《爱自己》送给像我当年一样迷茫、一样痛苦的考生们： “最孤独的时候，不会有谁来陪伴你；最伤心的时候，也没有人来呵护你。只有你自己，经历着一些必经的经历；只有靠自己，才能回答一些生命中的难题。”
相信自己！永不放弃！
