Using electronic devices for an extended period of time undoubtedly increases the risk of myopia progression. Therefore, it is important to reduce total screen time every day.
The best practice is to look at a screen for 20 minutes and then look up at a distance of 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This is known as the “20-20-20” Rule.
Consequently, 20-minute classes for elementary school students should be encouraged, with a total of 2.5 hours per day. 30-minute lessons for secondary school students should be practiced, with a total of 4 hours per day. A minimum break of 15-minutes between classes is recommended. Students' eyes will feel rested and refreshed by looking at distant objects or scenery (or eye care exercise). Recorded videos such as the MOOC courses or Micro courses are more convenient for students to review after class.
In addition, to effectively control screen time, we would like to remind all students to minimize electronic game play and watching TV, which would further increase screen time.
