1.2 Significance of Analyzing the Typology of SEs

This study contributes to the analysis of typological features related to the representation of stationary events. This contribution is exhibited in the following four aspects:elaboration of Path component, representation of Co-events ,investigation into constructional satellites ,and analysis of stationary events typology

The first aspect is elaboration of Path component.Talmy(2000b) divides the Path component of motion events into three subparts Vector Conformation and Deixis .But the Path of stationary events has never been treated sufficiently in his works. And Li's(2013a)research of stationary events in Mandarin Chinese also goes with a characterizing inadequacy of the semantics of spatial adpositions which represent the most significant part of the Path component.Based on their study,in this study,we will clarify the spatial adpositional schemas in the elicited Chinese data and thus provide a more precise characterization of the major part of Path or Site component in those stationary events. Particularly, it adds more details to the vector and the conformation subparts of the Path component.

The second aspect is representation of Co-events .The Talmyan dichotomy is based on the Path component of stationary events. And thus the other event components such as the Manner component are considered as Co-events .Talmy(2000b:28) proposes that there are at least six types of Co-events :precursion, enablement, cause, manner, concomitance, and subsequence. In this study we observed that those six types of Co-events have an unparalleled distribution in the elicited data. The data demonstrate that the Chinese subjects pay more attention to the Co-events after the framing event.

The third aspect is investigation into constructional satellites .Hardly was the function of constructions accepted by Talmy in his Cognitive Semantics(Talmy,2000a:23-24),particularly in his motion event typology(2000b:35).Other researchers working in this field such as Slobin also neglected the function of constructions[with the notable exception of Lampert(2016)].Nevertheless,it is taken up here to resolve the puzzle of satellites in dealing with stationary events. It is reasonable to regard constructions accompanying a main verb as satellite to the verb. This theoretical notion can be further applied to explicate the typological features of other events, such as those of state change(cf.Ren,Li&Deng,2015;Ren,2021).

Finally, this study provides a solution to the issue of stationary events typology .In this study, the representation and typology of the stationary events are studied in general.Talmyan S-language hypothesis of English and Chinese is revised. The finding is that,in English, when the main verbs are such posture verbs as lean lie put ,and sit ,and in Chinese, when the main verbs are such posture verbs as fang 4,“put”, kao 4,“lean”,and rao 4,“coil”,the typology of the sentences representing the stationary events are S-language.Besides,when the main verbs are respectively be in English and zai 4,“at”in Chinese, the sentences in both languages demonstrate a hybrid typology of both V-language and S-language.Based on the investigation of the English and Chinese empirical data, the author arrives at the conclusion that both languages demonstrate a complement typology in the representation of stationary events. coHBknqHKBM8ww/JiulcCoVXigtmteExJFTLAJIG7MuLEmZ7iT+mY/cVty/JDbJ9
