In this chapter,we briefly describe the overall picture of the newly emerged field of Cognitive Semantics (COS),and then mainly review theories of two strands:the research in spatial semantics and in stationary events.COS is predominantly associated with Talmy's work(cf.Talmy,2000a,2000b,2012a).The spatial semantic part mainly involves some classic theories in the domain of spatial representation including the Levinsonian frames of reference, the Talmyan fundamental spatial schematic system, and Zhang's research of spatial relation constructions.Although the research by many other linguists(e.g.,Jackendoff,1983,1990;Langacker,1993) or psychologists(e.g.,Wolff,2015)is also related to the spatial domain,we review and comment on the three because they have provided us with more systematic explanations to spatial representation. As for the second aspect,we mainly focus on the following three classic theories or research:the Talmyan motion event and other events,Slobin's third type,Li's empirical study of stationary motion events in Mandarin Chinese. The Talmyan theory is the origin of the analytical framework of this study.Slobin's trichotomy constitutes a main challenge to Talmy's dichotomy, and Li is the first linguist to analyze stationary events.
