PREFACE

This book is written from the perspective of Chinese college English writing,concretely,mainly investigates the problems that Chinese college students encounter in English writing with the aspects of error analysis theory and interlanguage theory,and also examines other possible reasons that affect students’writing,such as writing attitude,writing difficulties,and teachers’feedback.In the book,conceptions of error analysis and interlanguage are introduced and illustrated with specific examples.Furthermore,the theoretical framework is also derived from the previous studies which also focus on the same topic.The concrete data are collected through three kinds of methods,testing,questionnaire and semi-structured interview.The research demonstrates the writing errors students commit in their English writing with different frequencies,the reasons contributing to the errors and the methods to investigate the data.

This book is composed of six chapters.Chapter one provides information on the background of the study and the teaching context and situation of English writing in China.Chapter two reviews the literature on error analysis,contrastive analysis,and interlanguage,and provides the several theoretical frameworks demanded in this dissertation.Chapter three focuses on the methodology adopted in thesis study.It provides comprehensive information on the research design,the participants,the instruments adopted to conduct the research and the pilot study.Chapter four presents the results of the data analysis which are related to different errors,questionnaires and interviews.Chapter five discusses the five research questions.Chapter six reports the conclusion about the findings and the implications of these findings for the L2 writing teaching instruction and learning regulations.

The audience of this book might be the college English majors,or the postgraduates who are interested in Second Language Acquisition and try to do the research in this domain.Some statistical devices adopted in this study are friendly to the beginners who would like to conduct teaching experiments.The duration of writing this book,from collecting the data to the final draft,is about one and a half year.During this process,lots of data are provided by college students of non-English majors in Hainan Normal University.Meanwhile,my colleagues also offer me much precious information.More importantly,my gratitude should go to my supervisor professor Sunhee Kwon who supervises the whole process,from selecting the data to analyzing it with some concrete computer software.

This book is funded by College of Foreign Languages,Hainan Normal University,and I am so grateful for such action.Without the publication fund,this book may never come out.Besides,I also show my gratitude to the editors in Jinan University Press,Guangzhou.They audit the draft book many times,which makes the book fit to the standard of publication.

In all,the publication of this book is the outcome of the writer,supervisor,assistants and editors.In the future,I will dedicate myself fully to the English language teaching and teaching experiments,try to solve the practical problems,and contribute to the career of English teaching.
