插画是一种可以传达信息、表达情感和创造美感的艺术形式。基础插画包括线条、色彩、光影等内容。线条是插画的基础，漂亮的线条可以帮助插画师准确塑形并拉出结构；色彩可以增强视觉效果，更好地凸显实物；光影可以帮助构建立体形状，以增强插画的空间感。
插画风格不胜枚举，根据内容主要分为以下4种。
（1）扁平风格
扁平风格的插画是一种弱化细节的表现，并不完全表现真实的物体，而是对外形进行总结概括，而后提取特征，保留物体原有辨识度的一种插画风格，如图9.1-1～图9.1-4所示。

（2）涂鸦风格
涂鸦风格的插画，以大胆、自由的特性著称，常常展现出生动的线条和鲜明的色彩对比，深受现代设计和流行文化受众的喜爱，如图9.1-5～图9.1-8所示。

（3）动漫风格
动漫风格的插画强调角色的情感表达和动态感的表现，常用于叙述故事和刻画角色。它的独特造型和饱满的情感色彩，使其深受各年龄段受众的喜爱，如图9.1-9～图9.1-12所示。

（4）写实风格
写实风格的插画追求极致的形象、逼真和生动，需要通过对物体外部的观察和揣摩来实现，是插画应用最广泛、最传统的表现形式，如图9.1-13～图9.1-16所示。

插画常被应用于商业领域。如今通行于市场的商业插画主要包括出版物配图（书籍封面、内页、外套、内容辅助等使用的插画）、商业宣传（报纸、杂志、海报、广告牌、宣传单等使用的插画）、形象设计（商品标志、卡通吉祥物、IP设计等）、游戏设计（游戏人物设定、场景设计、宣传插画等）和影视插画（影视剧、广告片等方面的角色及环境美术设计）。
