In this part, first you are going to learn how to offer to do something and make requests. Then you will practise listening for some key information about action films and science fiction films.

1 Mr. Black wants to check out of the hotel and the clerk is offering some help. Listen to the model dialogue and underline the expressions of offering help and making requests.

Clerk:Good morning, Mr. Black, what can I do for you?

Mr. Black: We'd like to check out now. Would you please give me our bill?

Clerk:Certainly. Could I have the room number please?

Mr. Black: Rooms 501-510, 601-605.

Clerk:Oh, yes, the North Lake Team. I watched your match yesterday. Just a moment, please. I'll have your bill ready in a minute.

Mr. Black: Good.

Clerk:Your bill comes to $ 2,500 plus tax. How would you like to pay your bill?

Mr. Black: Do you accept traveler's checks?

Clerk:Yes, we do.

Mr. Black: Here you are.

Clerk:Thanks. Please sign here.

T ips of Pragmatics: Making a Request and Offering Help

● In making a request, you must be conscious of whether you are in a formal or informal situation in order to choose proper wording for your request.

● If we can help, we can say: Sure / Certainly / No problem . If we cannot help, we can say: I ' m sorry. / I ' d love to , but

● When you are helped, don't forget to thank the helper.

2 Suppose your partner is bored (sick, lonely, thirsty, depressed, out of shape,hard up, hungry or overworked). Talk to your partner and make some offers to help with his or her problems by using the expressions in the box below.
