The coconut (椰子) is a plant mainly grown in tropical (热带的) coastal areas and harvested by small-scale farmers. The production of coconuts is concentrated on island and coastal areas, such as Fiji and Samoa, as well as in the humid tropics, such as India and Thailand.
(76) The coconut is a very useful plant with a wide range of products being made from it. The products are used to make everything from clothing to animal feeds and to beauty creams. Its core is harvested for its flesh and delicious water while its covering outside is used for its strong fibers. Most important, however, are its oils, which are processed and marketed for many purposes.
Typically, the flesh is first dried down to 6% moisture, then the product is transported to factories across the world where it is processed into oil. Less widely used, but more valuable, the best coconut oil is directly squeezed from raw coconuts.
Today, the top coconut suppliers are struggling to meet the increasing demands of the world economy. Since coconut has been a cash crop (经济作物) for decades, even with fierce competition from other vegetable oils, it still continues to be a promising business in the future. However, the top international coconut producers must learn from the current situation, and take steps to ensure that their farms can develop well enough to stand the tests of time and meet future demands.
“Fair Trade” practices in the industry try to ensure that the benefits of the business will help small farmers, but they unfortunately keep the production rates rising at a slower rate. Lack of investment in maintaining the coconut-growing land, largely due to the high costs associated, means that some farms are producing 75% less fruit than they did 30 years ago.
The problem of short supply to meet the increased demand can be explained by the fact that many of the trees producing coconuts today are over 50 years old, 20 years past their best production time. According to the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, many plantations across Asia are experiencing zero growth, and some are even ceasing production as their farmers switch their focus to oil palm production.

Hydroelectricity (水电的) energy is a form of energy produced by controlling the power of moving water and converting it to electricity that can be used. A dam (水坝) is a vital part of this process and works by holding back this power and controlling its flow. The flow can then be used more effectively as its controlled speed turns turbines (涡轮机) to produce electricity.
(77) A dam is an essential part of this process because it creates height. When a dam is constructed on a large river, it is usually built with considerable height. Behind the dam, the river’s natural water flow builds up. At the bottom of the dam wall, there is a passage or water tunnel. The buildup of water flow behind the wall from the river’s current creates higher pressure. Due to the increasing pressure within the reservoir, the water will fall through the passage. The water tunnel leads to a turbine. As the water flows over the turbine, its current will cause the turbine to spin, thus producing power within the generator.
(78) The great thing about hydroelectricity is that it can never be exhausted. This means that, in theory, we can never run out of the source of this power. Once the water has passed over and turned the turbine, it flows out of the system and continues into the river on the other side of the dam. This means that the process only uses the current of the water, and the river is otherwise allowed to continue, unchanged. As long as the river continues to flow in that area, the dam will have a near-endless source of power.
Similarly, hydroelectricity dams allow plants to control the amount of electricity that is being produced. This means that a lot of electricity can be produced during peak time (generally daytime), while at night when usually less is needed, the plants can produce less. This works by using a special system to reuse the same water. Once the water flows through the passage, it can be returned into a pool above the power plants by machines. This process is done at off-peak times when energy demand is lower. By getting the water back into the reservoirs, the plants can reuse this water and have a sufficient supply of water on hand for times when electricity demand is high.

Amazon’s delivery drones (无人机) were supposed to be in full flight by now. In 2013, the company announced an experimental drone delivery service. Packages containing anything from toothpaste to a new smartphone would arrive at your front door by drone. (79) The drone would land, drop your parcel and fly away.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said at the time that the service would take four or five years to develop. But it’s been a little more than eight years. (80) The company is struggling to make progress. What happened?
Widespread drone delivery could have a huge impact. Drones have the potential to be even more efficient and environmentally friendly than electric delivery vehicles. But as Amazon’s struggles show, there are plenty of challenges. These include the need for more warehouses (仓库) and concerns about airspace safety.
Amazon isn’t the only company working to offer delivery by drone. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, also has a drone delivery service. It’s called Wing. In Australia, Wing’s drone deliveries have already taken off. Last August, the service announced its hundred-thousandth delivery.
Wing’s drones can wirelessly charge at a landing pad when they return from a delivery. Deliveries are automated (自动化的) , but they are monitored by pilots. Routes are determined based on factors such as distance, weather conditions, and airspace regulations. Deliveries are dropped in front of homes by a mechanical device. This means no human interaction (互动) is necessary.
The effect drones have on flying wildlife is still being researched. A European Environment Agency report paints out the tension between drones and birds. “Birds were found to be more sensitive to disturbances relating to the presence of drones”, it says. It gives an example of bird-drone interaction: In Austria, a pair of eagles went after a drone, thinking it was food.
And if drone delivery increases, providers will need space to ship and maintain drones. That means more warehouses. Drone delivery could also be a noisy nuisance. For instance, Amazon ships millions and millions of packages a week and it will be very loud to have the sky filled with drones.
