为便于阅读，引用休谟的著作时，我按照现代习惯对其18世纪的拼写方式做了轻微的改动，比如，“deriv'd”“pro duc'd”改为“derived”“produced”；“'tis”改为“it is”，“'twill”改为“it will”；“wou'd”和“cou'd”改为“would”和“could”。

全书均使用休谟著作标题的下述缩写。（著作的具体版本详见参考书目。）

D 《自然宗教对话录》（ Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion ）。引文注明对话的篇数，即从1到12，以及段数，例如： D 12.7。

E 《人类理解研究》（ An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding ）。引文注明章数与页码，例如： E 7, p.144。

EM 《道德原则研究》（ An Enquiry Concerning the Prin ciples of Morals ）。引文注明章数与段数，以及页码，例如： EM 6.21, p.125。

EMP 《道德、政治与文学论文集》（ Essays：Moral, Po litical, and Literary ）。引文注明论文标题以及页码，例如：《怀疑论者》， EMP , p.166。

ST 《论品味的标准》（‘ Of the Standard of Taste ’）。引文注明段数与EMP中的页码，例如： ST 7, p.229。

T 《人性论》（ A Treatise of Human Nature ）。引文依次注明卷数、章数与节数，以及页码，例如： T I.iv.2, p.216。
