“Zao Xin Tu” and “Fu Long Gan”

During the period of Northern Song Dynasty, the Crown Prince fell seriously ill. He had a yellowish complexion, experienced passing blood, vomiting blood,and even suffered from seizures. Despite the efforts of the imperial physicians who tried various treatments,the Crown Prince’s condition showed no signs of improvement and worsened over time. Emperor Shenzong was extremely worried. At this critical moment, someone recommended a folk “miracle doctor” named Qian Yi to the emperor. Qian Yi was summoned to the palace and,in a calm and composed manner, conducted a thorough examination. He then requested paper and pen and wrote a prescription for a medicine called “Yellow Earth Soup”. Perplexed, the imperial physicians asked, “What kind of medicine is‘Yellow Earth’?” Qian Yi replied, “It’s the yellow soil from the hearth.” The imperial physicians were skeptical, but the Crown Prince took the medicine as prescribed. Surprisingly, his seizures quickly stopped after the f irst dose.After two doses, the Crown Prince miraculously recovered completely.Emperor Shenzong was overjoyed and appointed Qian Yi as the Deputy Chief Imperial Physician. He also gave the “Zao Xin Tu” which had saved the Crown Prince’s life, the symbolic name “Fu Long Gan”.

Fu Long Gan

Qian Yi was a famous pediatrician in the Song Dynasty of China, revered as the “Saint of Pediatrics.” “Fu Long Gan” refers to the scorched yellow clay block at the center of the bottom of a clay stove used for burning firewood. It has a spicy taste and warm property,with the effects of warming the middle jiao , stopping bleeding, relieving vomiting, and stopping diarrhea.
