To the Late John H. Fowler, Esq.

Author of Poems of the Supernatural

Farewell, skill'd Fowler, whose weird numbers glow'd

With native genius by the Gods bestow'd;

Whose moving pen th' unbody'd shades inspir'd,

Whilst we, too crude to imitate, admir'd.

Thou haunting poet of the haunted wood,

How rapt have we o'er thy bright pages stood!

How oft with thee to heights supernal soar'd,

Or by thy aid uncanny depths explor'd!

Thine were the secrets of the gloomy glen,

Where wraiths, wind-wafted, kept their distant den;

Where sighing, spirits move the listless leaves,

And owlets nest on ruin'd castles eaves:

Forgotten fancies fill'd thy fairy field,

Nor would thy spell, save with thy body, yield!

Thy lustrous line with soul spontaneous grew,

Nor labour'd art nor pedants polish knew:

For measur'd cadence throbb'd the tuneful tide,

显示出诸神所赐予的天生才华;

那里的鬼灵,随风飘荡,守卫遥远的幽居;

And what we shape, to thee the Muse supply'd.

With what high fortitude did thy refrain

Deny the burden of thy earthly pain!

The aflicted flesh, by force of courage borne,

Remain'd for others, but not for thee, to mourn.

Tho' now thy eyes are clos'd in ceaseless rest,

Thy mem'ry by thy living work is blest;

Life's ills are vanish'd, but thy honour'd name

Lingers in state, and knows a grateful fame:

Th eternal bard, whom changing ages scan,

Defies destruction, and survives the man.

So live, sweet spirit, to awake the heart,

And with thy song responding bliss impart:

Sing as of yore, with tuneful notes that shew

The grace of Waller , and the depth of Poe .

Scarce death is thine, whose soul but sought that land

Of fair enchantment painted by thy hand!

你生机勃勃的作品记忆却被保佑;
