在汉语中名词常用量词来修饰，在英语中很多情况下也可用量词修饰名词，表示人或事物的单位或动作行为的单位。同一单位词根据不同的名词可有不同的翻译方法。
a piece of music 一段乐曲
an article of clothes 一件衣服
an article of daily use 一件日用品 a bit of advice 一点建议
度量单位词常用metre，inch, yard, foot, pound，kilogram（或kilo），ton，sum等。
a pound of meat 一磅肉
a ton of coal 一吨煤
a sum of money 一笔钱
two feet of cloth 两英尺布
表示容积的单位词主要有：box, bag, basket, bottle, cup, glass，basin等。一般情况下，表示容积的单位词既可修饰可数名词，也可修饰不可数名词。
a box of sweets 一盒糖
a basin of water 一盆水
a row of trees 一排树
a pile of stones 一堆石头
a room of people 一屋子人
a bus of passengers 一汽车乘客
形状单位词主要是指用形状描述名词的一些词，如：bar, ball, block, loaf, sheet, drop，grain等。形状单位词的运用大多数是习惯用法，不能随便更改。

a bar of chocolate 一块巧克力
a cake of soap 一块肥皂
a block of ice 一块冰
a grain of sand 一粒沙子
a mountain of rubbish 堆积如山的垃圾
动态单位词主要指用来描述“一阵”“一声”“一丝”“一道”等的词。
a fit of coughing 一阵咳嗽
a gust of wind 一阵风
a flash of hope 一丝希望
a shower of criticism 一阵批评
a burst of applause 一阵掌声
a roar of laughter 一阵狂笑
集体单位词如crowd，troop等，用来描述一个群体。
a crowd of people 一群人
a gang of people 一伙人
a troop of soldiers 一队士兵
a queue of people 一队排队等候的人

单位名词修饰复数名词时，一般要变成复数形式。如：
a bottle of ink—two bottles of ink a kind of bird—two kinds of birds
