44. 修德忘名 读书深心
44. Do away with fame when striving for virtue and be wholly devoted when resolving upon study.

学者 ^① 要收拾精神，并归一路。如修德而留意于事功名誉，必无实诣 ^② ；读书而寄兴于吟咏风雅，定不深心。

为学者修身治学贵在全神贯注，心无旁骛：如果一边修身一边却又惦记着事功名誉，就很难取得实实在在的成效；如果一边读书一边却又耽于吟咏风雅，就一定沉不下心来刻苦钻研。

One who persuades virtue and knowledge should be of concentration and wholeheartedness. If he cares too much about success and honor while undertaking self-refinement, there would be no real attainment.
