Text 1

The blurring of working women's roles refers to the fact that ______。

21. According to Paragraph 1, Ms.Simmons was criticized for ______.

[A] gaining excessive profits

[B] failing to fulfill her duty

[C] refusing to make compromises

[D] leaving the board in tough times

Step 1:

2.Simmons(利用人名定位快些)

3.was criticized for(位于题干最右侧,最核心)

Step 2:

第一段:①Ruth Simmons joined Goldman Sachs's board as an outside director in January 2000; a year later she became president of Brown University.②For the rest of the decade she apparently managed both roles without attracting much criticism .③But by the end of 2009 Ms. Simmons was under fire for having sat on Goldman's compensation committee; how could she have let those enormous bonus payouts pass unremarked? ④By February the next year Ms. Simmons had left the board.⑤The position was just taking up too much time, she said.

这三句中都没有直接出现最核心关键词was criticized for,但句③的was under fire是was criticized for的同义替换,由此判定这句就是本句。

同学: 老师,我不知道was under fire的意思,不知道它是was criticized for的同义替换。

22. We learn from Paragraph 2 that outside directors are supposed to be ______.

[A] generous investors

[B] unbiased executives

[C] share price forecasters

[D] independent advisers

Step 1:

2.outside directors

3.are supposed to(位于题干最右侧,最核心)

Step 2:

第二段:① Outside directors are supposed to serve as helpful, yet less biased, advisers on a firm's board.②Having made their wealth and their reputations elsewhere, they presumably have enough independence to disagree with the chief executive's proposals.③If the sky, and the share price, is falling, outside directors should be able to give advice based on having weathered their own crises.

同学: 可是D项的independent(独立的)本句里并没有啊。

biased [ˈbaɪəst] adj.

reputation [ˌrepjuˈteɪʃ n] n.

presumably [prɪˈzjuːməbli] adv.

executive [ɪɡˈzekjətɪv] n.

weather [ˈweðə(r)] vt.

22. Newspaper reviews in England before World WarⅡ were characterized by ______.

[A] free themes

[B] casual style

[C] elaborate layout

[D] radical viewpoints

Step 1:

1.Newspaper reviews

2.in England(专有名词易于定位)

3.World War Ⅱ(专有名词易于定位)

4.were characterized by(位于题干最右侧,最核心)

Step 2:

第三段:①We are even farther removed from the unfocused newspaper reviews published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War II , at a time when newsprint was dirt-cheap and stylish arts criticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared.②In those far-off days, it was taken for granted that the critics of major papers would write in detail and at length about the events they covered.③Theirs was a serious business, and even those reviewers who wore their learning lightly, like George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Newman, could be trusted to know what they were about.④These men believed in journalism as a calling, and were proud to be published in the daily press.⑤“So few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in journalism,” Newman wrote, “that I am tempted to define ‘journalism’ as ‘a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are’.”

28. The word “about-face”(Line 1, Para.3)most probably means ______.

[A] loss of goodwill

[B] increase of hostility

[C] change of attitude

[D] enhancement of dignity

Step 1:

1.Line 1, Para.3(精准定位位置)

2.about-face(推测词义的题,自然是要推测词义的这个词最核心)

Step 2:

第三段:①Curbs on business-method claims would be a dramatic about-face , because it was the Federal Circuit itself that introduced such patents with its 1998 decision in the so-called State Street Bank case, approving a patent on a way of pooling mutual-fund assets.②That ruling produced an explosion in business-method patent filings, initially by emerging Internet companies trying to stake out exclusive rights to specific types of online transactions.③Later, more established companies raced to add such patents to their files, if only as a defensive move against rivals that might beat them to the punch.④In 2005, IBM noted in a court filing that it had been issued more than 300 business-method patents, despite the fact that it questioned the legal basis for granting them.⑤Similarly, some Wall Street investment firms armed themselves with patents for financial products, even as they took positions in court cases opposing the practice.

curb [kɜːb] n.

claim [kleɪm] n.

dramatic [drəˈmætɪk] adj.

approve [ əˈpruːv] vt.

23. According to the researchers from Ohio University, after an outside director's surprise departure, the firm is likely to ______.

[A] become more stable

[B] report increased earnings

[C] do less well in the stock market

[D] perform worse in lawsuits

Step 1:

1.researchers from Ohio University

2.an outside director's surprise departure

3.the firm is likely to(位于题干的最右侧,且是题干的主干,最核心)

Step 2:

第三段:①The researchers from Ohio University used a database that covered more than 10,000 firms and more than 64,000 different directors between 1989 and 2004.②Then they simply checked which directors stayed from one proxy statement to the next.③The most likely reason for departing a board was age, so the researchers concentrated on those “surprise” disappearances by directors under the age of 70.④ They found that after a surprise departure , the probability that the company will subsequently have to restate earnings increases by nearly 20%.⑤The likelihood of being named in a federal class-action lawsuit also increases, and the stock is likely to perform worse.⑥The effect tended to be larger for larger firms .⑦Although a correlation between them leaving and subsequent bad performance at the firm is suggestive, it does not mean that such directors are always jumping off a sinking ship.⑧Often, they “trade up,” leaving riskier, smaller firms for larger and more stable firms .

比如possibility后面的that the company will subsequently have to restate earnings,它其实是一个that引导的同位语从句,在解释说明possibility是什么,而在和B项比对时,你只要会分析句子结构,能知道原文中increases的是probability,而不是earnings即可。

departure [dɪˈpɑːtʃə(r)] n.

subsequently [ˈsʌbsɪkwəntli] adv. 随后

federal [ˈfedərəl] adj.

23. Which of the following would Shaw and Newman most probably agree on?

[A] It is writers' duty to fulfill journalistic goals.

[B] It is contemptible for writers to be journalists.

[C] Writers are likely to be tempted into journalism.

[D] Not all writers are capable of journalistic writing.

1.Shaw and Newman(专有名词方便定位)

2.most probably agree on(最核心的关键词)

这道题的选项很有意思,每项都是一句话,每句都围绕writers和journalistic/journalism/journalist来说。

第三段:①We are even farther removed from the unfocused newspaper reviews published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War II, at a time when newsprint was dirt-cheap and stylish arts criticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared.②In those far-off days, it was taken for granted that the critics of major papers would write in detail and at length about the events they covered.③Theirs was a serious business, and even those reviewers who wore their learning lightly, like George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Newman , could be trusted to know what they were about.④ These men believed in journalism as a calling, and were proud to be published in the daily press.⑤“So few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in journalism,” Newman wrote, “that I am tempted to define ‘journalism’ as ‘a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are.”

33. What the researchers have observed recently shows that ______.

[A] the power of influence goes with social interactions

[B] interpersonal links can be enhanced through the media

[C] influentials have more channels to reach the public

[D] most celebrities enjoy wide media attention

Step 1:

1.What the researchers have observed(整个句子是一个意群)

2.shows(题干最右侧的,最核心)

Step 2:

第四段:①The researchers ’ argument stems from a simple observation about social influence: With the exception of a few celebrities like Oprah Winfrey—whose outsize presence is primarily a function of media, not interpersonal, influence—even the most influential members of a population simply don't interact with that many others.②Yet it is precisely these non-celebrity influentials, who, according to the two-step-flow theory, are supposed to drive social epidemics, by influencing their friends and colleagues directly.③For a social epidemic to occur, however, each person so affected must then influence his or her own acquaintances, who must in turn influence theirs, and so on; and just how many others pay attention to each of these people has little to do with the initial influential.④If people in the network just two degrees removed from the initial influential prove resistant, for example, the cascade of change won't propagate very far or affect many people.

Text 1

Text 1

1 A new study suggests that contrary to most surveys, people are actually more stressed at home than at work.Researchers measured people's cortisol, which is a stress marker, while they were at work and while they were at home and found it higher at what is supposed to be a place of refuge.

2 “Further contradicting conventional wisdom, we found that women as well as men have lower levels of stress at work than at home,” writes one of the researchers, Sarah Damaske. In fact women even say they feel better at work, she notes.“It is men, not women, who report being happier at home than at work.” Another surprise is that the findings hold true for both those with children and without, but more so for nonparents. This is why people who work outside the home have better health.

3 What the study doesn't measure is whether people are still doing work when they're at home, whether it is household work or work brought home from the office. For many men, the end of the workday is a time to kick back. For women who stay home, they never get to leave the office. And for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with household tasks. With the blurring of roles, and the fact that the home front lags well behind the workplace in making adjustments for working women, it's not surprising that women are more stressed at home.

4 But it's not just a gender thing. At work, people pretty much know what they're supposed to be doing: working, making money, doing the tasks they have to do in order to draw an income. The bargain is very pure: Employee puts in hours of physical or mental labor and employee draws out life sustaining moola .

5 On the home front, however, people have no such clarity.Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out. There are a lot of tasks to be done, there are inadequate rewards for most of them.Your home colleagues—your family—have no clear rewards for their labor; they need to be talked into it, or if they're teenagers, threatened with complete removal of all electronic devices.Plus, they're your family. You cannot fire your family. You never really get to go home from home.

6 So it's not surprising that people are more stressed at home. Not only are the tasks apparently infinite, the coworkers are much harder to motivate.

分析: 从题干和选项中,我们能发现文章高频出现的词主要有:home、working/workplace、women/mothers/wives。

23. The blurring of working women's roles refers to the fact that ______.

[A] they are both bread winners and housewives

[B] their home is also a place for kicking back

[C] there is often much housework left behind

[D] it is difficult for them to leave their office

大意: 职业女性的角色的blurring(模糊,混淆)指的什么事实?

主语the blurring of working women's roles中显然working women's roles和介词of一起构成介宾结构,作blurring的定语,所以中心语是blurring。

继续往后看,refers to the fact that ______。

第三段:①What the study doesn't measure is whether people are still doing work when they're at home, whether it is household work or work brought home from the office.②For many men, the end of the workday is a time to kick back.③For women who stay home, they never get to leave the office.④And for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with household tasks.⑤With the blurring of roles, and the fact that the home front lags well behind the workplace in making adjustments for working women, it's not surprising that women are more stressed at home.

状语: with the blurring of roles, and the fact ...

(and并列的两个“定冠词+名词”一起作with的宾语,the fact只是其中一个宾语,其后的that说明the fact的内容)

主干: it's not surprising that ...

2.即便你不认识blurring也确实没关系,因为the blurring of roles只是和the fact并列的内容,你能看懂the fact 后面的that从句就可以。

3.本句的主干“it's not surprising that ...”

由上述分析可知,答案需要匹配the fact 后的that从句的内容:the home front lags well behind the workplace in making adjustments for working women。

25. The home front differs from the workplace in that ______.

[A] home is hardly a cozier working environment

[B] division of labor at home is seldom clear-cut

[C] household tasks are generally more motivating

[D] family labor is often adequately rewarded

关键信息: the home front differs from the workplace

第三段:①What the study doesn't measure is whether people are still doing work when they're at home, whether it is household work or work brought home from the office.②For many men, the end of the workday is a time to kick back.③For women who stay home, they never get to leave the office.④And for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with household tasks.⑤With the blurring of roles, and the fact that the home front lags well behind the workplace in making adjustments for working women, it's not surprising that women are more stressed at home.

第五段:①On the home front , however, people have no such clarity.②Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out.③There are a lot of tasks to be done, there are inadequate rewards for most of them.④Your home colleagues—your family—have no clear rewards for their labor; they need to be talked into it, or if they're teenagers, threatened with complete removal of all electronic devices.⑤Plus, they're your family.⑥You cannot fire your family.⑦You never really get to go home from home.

On the home front, however, people have no such clarity. 初步锁定第五段的首句就是本句,关键点就在have no such clarity。

Step 3:

此时即便你不认识clinically and methodically也没关系,因为你会发现里面有个短语division of labor,而且seldom和下句的no such都表示否定,能形成同义替换。

这道题的核心解题句是句②:Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out.

这个核心解题句其实是 一个倒装句 ,它原本的语序应为:The household is rare,然后in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out 整个作the household的定语。

这句中的clinically and methodically laid out是什么意思呢?这就需要去上一句,即句①“On the home front, however, people have no such clarity.”

①On the home front, however, people have no such clarity.

②Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out.

②Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out .

Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clear .

Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clear .

还原倒装 = The household in which the division of labor is so clear is rare .(家务分工clear的家庭很rare.)

比对选项 = [B] division of labor at home is seldom clear-cut (人们在家的家务分工很少clear-cut.)

M+BryMcIsVqe6iA5sZRKb7DjIZBZfCsYUmRFbquBeDGHNfpxoBw9Fan5Roiyf+Kq
