温酒斩华雄(第五回)

威镇乾坤第一功,辕门画鼓响冬冬。

云长停盏施英勇,酒尚温时斩华雄。

(1)

The power of the man stands first in all the world;

At the gate of the camp was heard the rolling of the battle drums;

Then Yün-cháng set aside the wine cup till he should have displayed his valour,

And the wine was still warm when the enemy had been slain.

(C. H. Brewitt-Taylor)

(2)

His might sufficed to hold in place

the flames of sky and land.

The painted war drums charged the air

at the chieftains' field command.

The hero put the cup aside

to slake his combat lust:

Before the wine had time to cool,

Hua Xiong lay in the dust.

(Moss Roberts)

(3)

The most brilliant deed shook the world far and wide,

At the gate of the camp was heard the rolling of the battle drums.

Guan Yu set aside the wine cup till his valor was displayed,

And the wine was still warm when the enemy was slain.
