An enquiry is an indication that a buyer or seller is asking the other company about the relevant terms of a transaction to buy or sell goods．In international trade，the buyer generally takes the initiative to send an enquiry to the seller．It can ask about the price，but also about one or several other trading conditions to cause the other party to offer，in order to check the sincerity of the other party’s deal and to understand its opinion on the trading conditions．
Enquiries，also known as requests for quotations，can be divided into two types．One type only asks for a price，a catalog or a sample and is known as General Enquiries；the other type includes the terms of trade for a specific product and is known as Specific Enquiries．A proper letter of enquiry is necessary for business partners who are just establishing their business．This chapter aims to give you a better understanding about enquiries and replies．
