本书的研究问题是国家权力转移与族群冲突的关系，即探讨国际权力转移是否增加了或减少了族群冲突的可能性。那么研究的起点便落在何谓族群冲突以及国际权力转移的衡量上，所以在第1章中，在比较民族、族群和种族等概念的基础上界定了族群广义的概念，在冲突普遍性概念的基础上给族群冲突下了一个较宽泛的定义。结合族群冲突国际层面分析较少的状况，提出了族群冲突多重博弈的机制，即族群冲突是族群、民族国家和国际势力相互作用的结果。至于何谓国际权力转移便成为第2章的主要内容，在分析权力这一基础概念的基础上，第2章分别界定了族群权力、国家权力和国际权力的概念，提出国际权力转移的两个重要衡量指标——大国竞争和大国权力的兴衰，它们的变化对族群冲突的影响便是本书研究的主要内容。在该章中提出了两个基本假设：大国竞争会引发、加剧族群冲突；大国权力的兴衰会诱发、加剧族群冲突。那么如何论证这些假设便是第3章、第4章的主要内容。第3章以冷战时期的美苏争霸为背景，将大国竞争分为经济利益、地缘政治和意识形态三个维度，分别选取伊拉克库尔德人反对政府的族群冲突、斯里兰卡泰米尔人与僧伽罗人的族群冲突、安哥拉族群冲突为案例，来分析大国竞争对族群冲突的影响。第4章以阿塞拜疆与亚美尼亚的族群冲突和乌克兰危机为例来阐述大国权力的兴衰对族群冲突的影响。第5章是对全文的总结，得出国际权力转移是族群冲突催化剂的结论，并指出族群冲突对国际权力转移的反向影响以及族群冲突全球治理的新模式是值得进一步研究的问题。
（1）历史分析。本文主要以20世纪90年代国际权力转移为背景，以一种历史的方法来探讨其对族群冲突的影响。其中主要采用了比较历史分析和路径依赖的方法。路径依赖作为历史制度主义常用的方法， [199] 它的基本观点是“你从哪里来决定了你到哪里去”，即在某个时间节点前的行为或制度会影响这一时间节点后的行为或制度。 [200] 在文中的族群冲突案例分析时，无不可见西方殖民者“分而治之”的族群政治制度遗产对于当下族群冲突的影响。比较历史分析既是政治学中一个有效的研究方法，也是历史分析方法的一种。 [201] 它主要采用求同和求异两种方法进行分析，前者通过比较分析事件发生的不同偶然因素，来找寻因果的相似性；后者通过比较分析事件发生的相似原因和过程，来找寻不同结果的原因。本书对历史上的大国的经济、地缘政治、意识形态不同维度的竞争带来的族群冲突，比较会发现它们之间虽然竞争的主要内容不同，但给族群竞争带来的结果却是相同的。
（2）比较案例分析作为定性研究中一种常见的研究方法，具体指在某一类事件或现象中，以随机抽样或按照一定标准选取一个或多个作为分析对象，通过比较它们的异同，从而找出共有的因果机制，进而获取相同的知识或发展某一理论。 [202] 比如卢旺达大屠杀就是民族冲突、危机管理一类事件中一个典型案例。本书将选取不同制类型的多民族国家的族群冲突作为案例，来分析它们与国际权力转移的关系。
（3）过程追踪。事物的产生和发展是由因果链条中的多个节点构成的，过程追踪就是通过分析这些链条中的各个节点，来找寻事物产生、发展的根本原因的过程。 [203] 在本书的几个案例分析过程中，涉及族群冲突历史原因的追溯，也对族群冲突的过程加以梳理，以发现国际势力是如何渗入族群冲突的过程。
（4）数据分析。本书尝试着以不同数据库所得来的族群冲突数据，以死亡1000人以上的族群冲突所发生的次数与美苏竞争的攻守阶段来简单地寻求两者间大致的关系；同时在论及大国意识形态争夺时，特别是西方式民主对族群冲突影响的关系时，对20世纪80年代后采取民主制的国家与族群冲突所发生的次数以及死亡的人数做了简单的数表分析，以图得知两者间的关系。当然这离定量分析还有一段距离，所以在这里只能称为数据分析。
