Based on the WADA relevant Guideline,Technical Document and the information from peer reviewed papers in international journals and from Internet, this presentation includes:(1)Introduction of the definition for Athlete Biological Passport(ABP).The goal, the principle and the major working flow chart of ABP show that ABP is indeed an effective way providing new advantages for detection of doping;(2)The historical evolution of the concepts for ABP,from longitudinal study(T/E ratio follow up investigation etc.),“health blood test”with no start in competition,On/Off model to recent Bayesian statistics;(3)Procedural key points for blood collection and transportation of the samples to the laboratory properly, for laboratory analysis using a harmonized protocol to obtain comparable values and for evaluation of the analytical results to make a final decision.(4)Lastly,this presentation ends with the information about recent references, about WADA official documents, about the available software and about some adverse cases opened by ABP recently.
In conclusion, based on the scientific common sense that the biological parameters of an individual normally remain stable in a certain range when all potential influencing factors are maintained constant and all measurements are carried out in a standardized longitudinal manner,ABP takes the athlete’s biological parameters measured in different times for follow up investigation. An abnormal deviation in one biological parameter or a set of biological parameters from their own norms may constitute evidence for doping violation, but only when the exclusion of any pathological and/or physiological influence related to the observed anomaly or anomalies could be accepted by an independent expert commission. In addition, any abnormality in the longitudinal profile of an athlete not over the criteria for doping violation could be taken as an important reminder for further target test. Therefore it is widely expected that ABP will increase the effectiveness of smart doping control in the field.
