The study of industrial organization of Beijing fitness industry

Introduction :With the rapid development of China’s economy,especially for the tremendous success of Beijing Olympics,the development of Chinese sport industry has been greatly promoted.In recent years,the fitness industry in Beijing has witnessed rapid growth;however,comparing with developed countries and areas,it still has lots of problems,such as bad industrial structure and low corporate efficiency.These problems are,to some extend,great obstacles for improvement of Chinese nationals’life quality and the development of Chinese sport industry.Utilizing the theories on industry organization,the nature,the running and the effect of this system is discussed.The study raises suggestions according to the current status of Beijing fitness industry,so as to provide decision-making information to governments.

Methods :With the SCP the analytical paradigm in the industrial organization theory,the paper draws its conclusion by adopting methodologies including literature review,mathematical statistics,comparative analysis and logical analytics,with the research method of demonstration and standard analysis together.The paper based on intensive investigation to research on the fitness industry in Beijing.Then it adapts SCP theory to analysis the industrial organization of Beijing’s fitness industry from industrial Structure(including market concentration;product differentiation;market barriers);Conduct(price conduct;non-price conduct)and Performance(the scale structure efficiency;the development technical progress).

Discussion/ Conclusion :(1)The market concentration of the fitness industry in Beijing is relatively low,CR4=28.39%.The product homogenization phenomenon is very prominent,and the barrier to entry and exit are comparatively low.Based on the above index,Market Structure of the fitness industry in Beijing belongs to the market structure of competitive type.(2)Under the high degree of Competition market structure,for gaining increasing market shares,the fitness clubs in Beijing takes expansionary tactics to get stabilize growth rationally.Most of market competition behaviors of the enterprises are price conduct.The organizational adjustment behavior includes the shop expansion;the direct-operation chain;the franchise system and the financing project.(3)The effect of scale economy of the fitness industry in Beijing is poor,meanwhile the commercial pattern innovation is not enough.However,there is a space for the market Performance to be improved.(4)The policy proposal for the fitness industry in Beijing contains making policy to improve the industry concentration,reducing the number of cut-throat competition,and so on.
