在庆祝中国共产党九十华诞之际，《中国高等学校体育教育研究——大学校长论大学体育教育暨网球文化》一书即将出版发行。这是深入贯彻全国教育工作会议精神，进一步学习和落实全国体育事业发展“十二五”规划中提到的“全面提高青少年健康素质，将学校体育教育提升到重要高度”的指导原则，切实加强学校体育工作的一部思想认识升华的结晶。
在某种意义上讲，健康的体魄是素质、能力和知识的基础和载体。体育在人的全面发展和整个教育事业中具有不可替代的作用。早在1917年，毛泽东同志就在《新青年》杂志发表了《体育之研究》，指出：“欲文明其精神，先自野蛮其体魄；苟野蛮其体魄矣，则文明之精神随之。”回顾新中国的体育教育史，从解放初期仿效苏联推行的“劳卫制”，到新时期实施的“阳光体育”运动；从贺龙副总理20世纪50年代亲自以“全国体育运动红旗院校”的荣誉激励先进，到21世纪初《中共中央国务院关于加强青少年体育、增强青少年体质的意见》正式颁布，党和国家一贯高度重视体育教育，始终高度关注青少年学生的德智体美的全面发展。
学校体育教育是全民体育的一个重要组成部分，更是培养合格人才，实现终身体育的一个重要环节。就一所大学而言，体育教育观反映的不仅仅是这所大学的文化传统，更重要是展现了其精神风貌和办学理念。作为一所大学的主持者的校长们，对体育教育的理解与认识将直接影响着一所学校的气象和精神，如南开大学的创办者教育家张伯苓校长对教育事业的贡献首先在体育，他说：“教育如果没有体育，教育就不完全”；清华大学老校长蒋南翔先生那句“为祖国健康工作五十年”的激情话语，则浓缩了百年清华的体育精神和爱国传统。推而论之，大学校长们对于体育的影响力早已超越校园和在校的学生，他们的言行直接关系着社会体育的价值取向和文化发展。故，体育文化的传承与发展、体育功能的开发与创新、体育价值的认知与引导，都有待大学校长们站在历史的高度去担当研究者、倡导者和实施者。可喜的是，众多高校的党政领导已经把对体育工作重要性的认识与创建世界一流大学、培养高素质创新型人才、实现中华民族伟大复兴的追求紧密联系起来了。他们清楚地认识到体育教育关系到祖国人才培养大计，并撰文研究，身体力行，成为青少年学生们学习之楷模。
网球运动在全国高校的普及和推广对发展大学体育教育产生了积极的推动作用。网球运动不仅使大学生掌握一门运动的技艺，使身心得到了锻炼和愉悦，还使他们在特有的文化氛围中学习到文明礼仪和行为规范，非常有助于树立正确的成败观和价值观。
本书中既有大学校长们对于中国体育教育思想的解读、体育教育理论与体育文化的研究、体育教育方略与举措的感悟，又有对体育运动技术的研究，还有校长们自身从事体育锻炼的经验，真可谓是一本全面而又生动的体育教育的“活”教材。
让我们在党的正确教育思想的指引下，为中华民族的伟大复兴，培养出一代又一代的仁义双全、智勇兼备、“六艺”皆通的社会主义事业的建设者和接班人。
