Abstract

The study investigated parts of excellent adolescent basketball teams in China. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to modify and design Coach Leadership Style Scale, Team Interpersonal Communication Questionnaire, and Athlete Achievement Motivation Scale on the basis of literature and interview. After the research tool were explored by the reliability and validity, which was to used to examine the relationship among coach leadership style, athlete achievement motivation, team interpersonal communication, satisfaction performance and cohesion. In the end, the mediational efects of team shared mental model and team eficacy on the group cohesion-performance relationship was explored.The main conclusions can be summarized as follows:

Firstly, the revised Coach Leadership Style Scale is a 2-dimension structure including 10 items and achievement motivation scale is a 2-dimension structure including 23 items. The reliability and validity of them is good enough for diagnosing and evaluating group cohesion and coach leadership style in domestic sports teams.

The designed Team Interpersonal Communication Questionnaire is a one-dimension structure including 7 items and team shared mental models questionnaire includes 4 scenarios, each one has 10 items. The reliability and validity of them are good enough to be used to diagnose and evaluate team interpersonal communication and basketball sense of tactics in domestic sports teams.

Secondly, Secondly, the group cohesion of the excellent adolescent basketball teams in china is high as a whole. The scores of group cohesion tend to be higher with the growth of age.Player of diferent sex, in the group integration-task and the group integration-social, has apparent diference. Female players have much higher scores than male players.Players of diferent family origin have apparent diference in the group integration-social; the athletes have much higher scores from city than from countryside. The more athletes train every week, the higher group cohesion is. There are no difference between different family culture backgrounds, court status, court position, and training years.

Thirdly, the influencing factors of group cohesion can be generalized as coach quality, athlete personal character, interpersonal relationship,team intercharacter and external stimulation. The coach quality is the most important factor.

Fourthly, wether male or female players, democratic leadership style, achievement motivation and interpersonal communication are the main predictors of cohesion. Male athletes’ perceived the individual attractions to the group-task mediate the relationship between team interpersonal communication and team ,p erformance satisfaction;mediate the relationship between team interpersonal communication and team interpersonal communication satisfaction. Female athletes’perceived the group integration-task mediates the relationship between athletes’ achievement motivation and team interpersonal communication satisfaction.For all players, the group integration-task mediates the relationship between team interpersonal communication and team performance.

Fifthly, athletes’ perceived task-cohesion is the main predictor of team shared mental models and team eficacy; the latter two are the main predictor of team performance; team shared mental models and team eficacies mediate the relationship between cohesion and team performance.
