Since ancient times, seals have been a proof of identity and a symbol of power in China. Seals are not only functional, but also an art form, an ancient art combining calligraphy and engraving, often regarded as independent works of art alongside calligraphy and painting. From the selection of materials, the craft of production to the design of characters, seals have extremely rich aesthetic expressions. Artists in other countries usually sign their paintings, while Chinese artists often stamp seals on their paintings instead of signing their names. In this way, the seal also becomes a part of the work, which is a way to reflect the uniqueness of the work.
1． 第一句： “自古以来”是时间状语，在句首，翻译成Since ancient times；“是身份的凭证和权力的象征”翻译成have been a proof of identity and a symbol of power。
2． 第二句： 句子较长，先找到主干，即“印章不仅具有实用性，而且也是一种艺术形式”，其中有并列结构“不仅……而且……”，需翻译成并列连词not only...but also...“具有实用性”为动宾结构，但翻译成英文时，用系表结构表达更地道，即are functional，“一种艺术形式”翻译成an art form。后面的两个分句都是对句子主干的进一步说明，“是……的古老艺术”是前面“是一种艺术形式”的同位语，故可翻译为an ancient art...；“集书法与雕刻于一体的”充当“古老艺术”的定语，既可以翻译成现在分词短语combining calligraphy and engraving，也可以翻译成定语从句that/which combines calligraphy and engraving；“经常被看作与书画并列的独立艺术品”需翻译成非谓语动词短语，其逻辑主语是句子的主语seals，与“看作”构成被动关系，故需使用过去分词短语。
