按连词性质可以分为两类：并列连词和从属连词。并列连词用来引导两个并列的词、短语或者句子，并列连词有and、but、or、nor、so、therefore、yet、however、for、hence、as well as、both...and、not only...but also、either...or、neither...nor、（and） then等。从属连词主要引导状语从句、名词性从句等，其中引导名词性从句的连词有that、whether等，引导状语从句的连词有when、because、since、if等。
