As far back as 20 years ago, more than three-quarters of workers (77%) expected to work for pay after they retired, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Of those who felt that way, most say it’s because they’ll want to, not because they’ll 1 . At the time the survey was done, 2 , just 12% of retirees continued working for pay. What changed?

It seems we boomers are unlike 3 generations. It’s not uncommon for us to continue to work well into our 60s, 70s, or even 80s, especially when earning money is as 4 as tapping keys on a computer keyboard and no heavy lifting is involved. Some of us need the money, while others 5 what we do or just need to stay busy. According to a study by U.S. News and World Report , with continued 6 in health care and life expectancy, people can spend as long in retirement as they spent working.

No one is telling you that you shouldn’t sit back and smell the coffee after decade 7 decade of full-time employment. But studies now show increasing 8 that the payoff of working past age 65 may go beyond income. Some studies have linked working past retirement with better 9 and longevity. A 2016 study of about 3,000 people suggested that working even one more year beyond retirement age was 10 with a 9% to 11% lower risk of dying, 11 health. A 2015 study suggested that, 12 people who retired, people who worked past age 65 were about three times more 13 to report being in good health and about half as likely to have serious health 14 , such as cancer or heart disease, while other studies have 15 working past retirement age with a 16 risk of dementia and heart attack.

Many of us only know one thing. The number we 17 to our years no longer makes any 18 except to make us realize that if we don’t try doing the things we want to do now, then when? How fun would it be to find out that those talents that were 19 in us all these years are truly 20 ?
