在英语中，在书信末尾的“附言”是PS，即postscript“后面（post）+ 写下的东西（script）”的缩略语。电影、戏剧、广播等的“台本”或“脚本”是script，在拉丁语中的原意是“写下的东西”。manuscript是“通过手（manu）+ 写下的东西（script）”，也就是“原稿”的意思。Scripture是“圣经”的意思。scribble是“scrib（写）+ ble（反复）”，引申出“潦草地写”的含义。
