同中国人的姓前名后不一样，英美人大多数都是姓后名前，即我们通常所说的first name就是他们的名，这也是他们的教名。family name和last name都指的是他们的“姓”。其中，family name较last name来说更正式，我们在填表格的时候常见的是family name。英美人的名字结构通常为：教名（first name / given name）·中间名（middle name）·姓（family name / last name）。如果有的人教名比较长，熟悉的朋友或亲人之间会用小名来称呼这个人，也就是昵称，比如《傲慢与偏见》里伊丽莎白（Elizabeth）的家人都叫她莉齐（Lizzy）。
