When people are kind, they are more patient and more aware of the suffering of others. And they are better able to be happy with other people's success. Young people develop kindness through acts of caring and helping others, and as they grow, it can guide their behaviors in positive ways. Being a caring and helpful role model is the best method for parents to teach their children about kindness, and setting a good example is the key to making them apply these values to their relationships.

The first step in kindness is helping. Maurice Elias, director of the Rutgers Social-Emotional Learning Lab, thinks that chances to be helpful around the house should be found. For example, take on small responsibilities during the morning routine, like helping the families cook or wash the dishes after breakfast. Or help an elderly neighbor with some work. Elias says that these are actions that bring about strong positive feelings in young people, which can result in their wanting to volunteer 自愿 ) to help others.

Another good way to show kindness is to collect things from family members regularly and donate them to a charity 慈善机构 ). Sometimes people just need a little extra help, and being kind may make a big difference in the lives of the others in need. A kind word, a smile, helping carry a heavy box, giving honest compliments 赞美 ), sending an email to thank someone, telling someone how amazing she/he is, sharing homemade food, refusing to do some things that may hurt others can all be actions of kindness.

What comes to mind when you think of the facial recognition 人脸识别 ) technology? Whatever you think up, facial recognition technology is real and has recently been put into use by New York's Lockport City School District.

There is a debate among students, parents, educators, and lawmakers, some of whom have raised their concerns. Let's look at the arguments on both sides.

Supporters of facial recognition technology think that it is a useful tool that can quickly identify 确认 ) potential criminals and prevent shootings in public places from occurring.

The technology itself is also becoming ever more advanced and less expensive. Schools that already have advanced digital cameras can start facial recognition through new software or buy special cameras for less than $1000.

However, there are risks with facial recognition technology and it raises some questions.

A federal government study showed that most commercial facial recognition systems have a higher chance of wrongly identifying Asian and African-American faces compared to those of white people. Another study found that mistakes appear more often when the technology is used for children (because their faces change as they grow older).

There are also concerns about privacy 隐私 ). Once a student's face is included in the database, the technology can identify the student and show his or her activities around the school over the past 60 days. It is uncertain which parties—individual schools, police departments, software companies, or federal/state governments—would have access to the database, and students could be at risk if bad guys with advanced computer technology on the Internet manage to get their information.

1. What do we know about the use of facial recognition technology in New York's Lockport City School District?

A. It has caused a debate among different parties.

B. It is warmly welcomed by students and teachers.

C. It effectively prevents shootings from happening.

D. It is the most advanced and expensive technology.

2. What did the government study show about facial recognition systems?

A. They are a useful tool that can quickly identify bad guys.

B. They are more likely to fail to identify faces of certain races.

C. They proved to be accurate and effective in most public places.

D. They have wrongly identified Asian and Latin American faces.

3. Why are there more mistakes when the technology is used for children?

A. Because children's faces are too small.

B. Because children's faces keep changing with age.

C. Because the cameras don't work well sometimes.

D. Because the technology doesn't have new software.

4. What can we learn from the last para-graph?

A. Every party is sure to have access to the students' privacy.

B. Students' privacy can be better protected with this technology.

C. This technology will keep the students' activities for only 60 days.

D. The risk is that bad guys will be able to get students' information. Z4yy8WG+TN8CULcqabklreQnJ/NvZg4osh0jla1a1he6ZpkPi1E2I3/xklnXt1eL
