0.3 Basic Requirements of College Physics Experiment Course

All students must meet the following three requirements after taking this course:

(1) All students should develop a good habit of doing scientific experiments. By learning through the college experimental course in physics, pupils need to gain a better sense of the position, function and task of the course, based on a deeper understanding of its importance in a realistic perspective. In addition, all students must consciously develop decent scientific experimental literacy, such as seeking truth from facts, being strict in attitude and integrating theories with practices. Furthermore, all students are supposed to cultivate good virtues like obeying lab regulations,cooperating, protecting public properties, and keeping the lab clean after experiments.

(2) Another demand for students is to learn and grasp the basic knowledge relating to physical experiments. After observing, analyzing experimental phenomena, measuring the physical quantities and processing through data, students ought to learn and understand the basic knowledge of physical experiments, such as error theory (including the basic concept of measurement error, error evaluation of direct and indirect measurement results, effective number operation), some important methods of data processing (such as tabulation method, graphic interpretation, successive minus method and least-squares method), and learning how to solve specific physical problems by physical principles and methods to gain a deeper insight into them.

(3) In order to train and improve students’ scientific experiment ability in science, it should include the following five aspects.

① Training improves students’ ability to learn all by themselves. Students must complete the pre-experimental preparation by carefully reading the experimental textbook to figure out relative theories and have an overview of the whole process. Also, they ought to not only think through the possible difficulties during the real experiment, but also manage to solve those problems preliminarily by searching for relevant information to accomplish the experiment.

② Training improves students’ practical ability. Students have to correctly select and connect all the experimental equipments which are needed in an experiment. In addition, students can take measurements with the instruments and then get accurate results. Furthermore, with some basic physical experiment skills, students are able to identify and then eliminate simple faults in an experiment.

③ Training improves students’ ability to analyze problems. All students must complete the experiment by integrating theories with practices through careful observation, testing, analyzation and diagnosis in experimental phenomena.

④ Training improves students’ designing and innovative ability. According to the requirements of research objects or experimental subjects, students are able to formulate experimental schemes,select suitable instruments and determine the optimal procedures based on an appropriate theory with the approaches of references.
