To produce an exclusive and unique interior design for the Hong Kong Peninsula Hotel helipad lounge,a space required to operate as a first class helicopter arrival/departure area as well as an exclusive venue for private functions.
1.The responsibility of initiating all historic research and co-ordinating the collection of aviation memorabilia which would become an integral component of the interior,as well as detailed study of the aircraft interior cabin details and external fabrication methods for aircraft of the period, specifically the interior of the Douglas DC 3 and DC 4.The research encompassed sourcing archival material from prominent airlines, aviation specialists and historians,as well as a wealth of aviation pioneers. From the initial period of design and research, the library of resources developed over two years into a notable memorabilia collection.
2.Additional challenges were presented by the limited height of the vision glass area(which allows views of the harbour)determined by the exterior building design and the feature'cornice/soffit'at the top of the tower(directly below the helipads),and the 1.7 meter height from the interior floor level to the cornice soffit.
1.This goal was achieved by locating the especially selected metal frame lounge seating adjacent to the parameter of the vision glass, where a series of feature aluminum blades'frame'the harbour view. These blades also provide control points for dedicated reading lights and headphone controls for planned audio programming.
2.From a technical viewpoint, the lounge is designed to facilitate the highest standards of security and handling for helicopter travel.Provision for security and customs checks is provided as well as baggage weighing and storage capacity.Iltimately the lounge is planned to accommodate international travel requirements and associated equipment.A fully equipped pilot's station complete with technical monitoring equipment, pilot rest and shower area further defines this lounge as a state-of-the-art helipad facility.
1.A theme evocative of the golden years of aviation circa 1930-40s was developed, evoking the time when commercial aviation routes linking North American and Asia were emerging in the highest standards of aircraft travel luxury.
2.Synonymous with this pioneering period of commercial aviation were the famous Pan Am“Clippers",which were known for their progressive combination of aeronautical design aesthetics as well as the highest standards of interior cabin luxury. This became the model and inspira-tion for the design of the lounge, which uses a hierarchy of aviation themes, memorabilia, and select period artefacts to combine both museum and first class travel standards in one venue.
3.When not operating as a helipad port, the lounge can accommodate private functions, and has a fully appointed kitchenette and server to cater for special events. The custom-designed interior furnishings can be rearranged to suit most occasions with a specially designed de mountable table available for private dinner parties or meetings.
4.Perhaps the most notable artefacts within the lounge are the items which were kindly donated by individuals, including the Peninsula Chairman and some of his friends, and reconditioned and displayed in specially designed cabinets positioned within the lounge as interior focal points. These include:a 1942[Pratt&Whitney]radial aircraft engine,a[1944]Hamilton Standard Propeller, and a fuselage section from a Douglas DC-4/C-54.
5.All interior finishes and furnishings were carefully designed and/or selected with particular attention to achieving an exclusive interior unique only to the China Clipper Lounge.
6.Direct access to the helipads above is achieved via a granite clad stairway with stainless steel and aluminum detail. This stairway features a specially designed official opening plaque as well as a feature“Wing"aluminum canopy with matching balustrade. This all-weather stair acts as the main transitional space from lounge to pad and is designed to both introduce and leave a lasting impression upon all guests who visit.
