《不一样的爸爸》（ I am Sam ）2001年上映，主演肖恩·佩恩（Sean Penn）凭借出色的表演获第74届奥斯卡最佳男主角的提名。该片获2002年青年艺术家奖（Young Artist Award）最佳剧情类电影等多项奖项。
影片讲述了智商只相当于7岁孩童的父亲山姆（Sam），为夺回女儿露西（Lucy）的抚养权所作的不懈努力，他与生俱来的父爱和善良包容的心灵感动了所有人，最终赢得女儿。

S: Put the present there. You have to hurry, because Lucy’s coming.
Girls: Come on, hide with us. Come on, over here.
S: Hello, OK. Annie said Lucy’s coming up the stairs right now. So you have to assume the surprise position.
C: I bet she already knows. ①
S: Why are you being a party pooper? ② She’s coming now. You have to assume the surprise position. Yeah, go back!
C: Don’t touch me. I’ve got cooties ! It’s contagious !
CF: Hey, what are you doing? Get your hands off him. What are you doing touching my kid?Leave him alone!
All: Surprise!
S: Happy birthday.
L: Daddy?
C: You don’t have to call him Daddy. She said you’re not her real father anyway . She said she was adopted.

1. I bet she already knows.
I bet字面意思是“我打赌”。英语口语中，常以此开头，表示“我断言，我确定，我敢说”。如I bet he’ll spend all his money in a few days because the money is burning a hole in his pocket.（我敢说，不出几天他就会把钱花光，因为他是个留不住钱的人。）片中，这句话出自一个小孩子之口，译为“我断言”就显得太正式了，不妨直译为“我敢打赌”、“我敢说”或“我敢打包票”。
2. Why are you being a party pooper?
pooper指“翻过船尾的大浪”，party pooper属英语中非正式的说法，表示“社交聚会上令人扫兴的人，煞风景的人”，引申为“令人扫兴的人，给别人泼冷水的人”。如I’m sorry to be a party pooper, but I have to go home now.（很抱歉扫大家的兴，我现在必须得回家了。）

山姆让所有人在露西进门前藏好，小男孩康纳却偏要对着干，山姆上前劝解，康纳便大声喊出这句话，并重读me，cooties和contagious，他的表情和语气都留露着对山姆的嫌恶之情。

T: Why would your friend say that if you haven’t said that?
L: Kids lie all the time.
T: Lucy, remember you’re under oath. ②
L: I know.
T: And you know what that means?
L: I do.
T: All right, now that we have all agreed to tell the truth, where were you sleeping last night?
L: In my bed at the foster home.
T: If you’re not going to tell the truth, I am. Your dad kidnapped you last night.

T: You’re lying because you’re afraid.
R: Objection. He’s putting words in her mouth.
J: Sustained. Please limit yourself to questions, Mr. Turner.
S: You have to tell the truth.
T: Lucy, are you afraid to tell the truth because you’ll hurt your Daddy’s feelings?
S: Daddy’s right here. You can tell the truth.
T: Isn’t it true that very deep down inside, very deep inside, you know you need much more than your daddy can give you?

1. Everybody gets older. It’s not that big a deal.
It’s not that big a deal表示“不是大事，没什么大不了的”，还可以说It’s not a big deal或It’s no big deal。片中，聪明的露西知道大人们想把自己和爸爸分开，心中十分反感，所以当里克祝贺露西又长一岁时，露西小大人似地回答Everybody gets older，并说It’s not that big a deal，表达心中的抵触情绪。
2. Lucy, remember you’re under oath.
under oath字面意思是“在誓言下”，是英美法庭上常出现的一句话，一般是法官提醒发言的人，既然宣过誓，就要说实话。如The judge reminded the witness that he was still under oath.（法官提醒证人，他已发誓要说实话）。片中，里克用这句话提醒露西不许撒谎，要说真话。除under oath，其它法庭常用语，如objection（反对），可以在控辩双方律师如果认为对方或证人发言不属实时使用。sustained（反对有效），法官常说。

Why would I say that?是特殊疑问句，按规律，一般疑问句结尾处用升调，特殊疑问句句尾处用降调。但露西在说以why引导的特殊疑问句时提高了声调，并重读that一词末，极力否认跟朋友说过自己是抱养的。

And then he looks at me with such anger and I hate him then. “I know I’m failing you. I know I’m disappointing you. I know you deserve better, but get in the fucking car!” Every morning, I wake up and I fail. And I look around, and everybody seems to be pull ing it off but somehow I can’t no matter how hard I try. Somehow... I’ll never be enough.
S: You’re enough. Yeah, you’re much more than enough. Lovely Rita.

1. You think you got the market cornered on human suffering?
句中的get the market cornered相当于corner the market。get sth.+及物动词的过去分词，表示“办成某事，做到……”。corner the market本是商业用语，意为“垄断市场，囤积居奇”。corner the market on human suffering的字面意思是“饱受人类的种种苦难遭遇”，即“世界上只有……一个人遭罪，受苦”。女律师丽塔在哭诉自己不幸时，用You think you got the market cornered on human suffering质问山姆，可译为“难道世上受苦的就你一个人吗？”或“难道世上就数你最惨吗？”
2. People like me feel lost and little and ugly and dispensable. People like me have husbands screwing someone else far more perfect than me. People like me have sons who hate them.
丽塔哭诉自己的不幸，三句以people like me开头的句子使用了排比的修辞手法，句子结构相同，凸显了丽塔对自己现状的不满和满腹的委屈。同一段台词中，她转述骂儿子的话I know I’m failing you. I know I’m disappointing you. I know you deserve better, but...，三个以I know开头的句子也构成了排比句。

面对山姆的质疑，丽塔的情绪彻底崩溃，说出大段独白，这个排比句就是其中的一句，丽塔重读排比结构People like me中的me，反驳山姆的观点，告诉他在旁人眼中如此“完美”的自己在生活中也有各种不为人知的遭遇。

him弱读为[im]。
cross one’s fingers / keep one’s fingers crossed：影片中露西在出庭作证起誓时候，食指叠在中指上，这是西方流行的一种手势，人们在不得已要做出虚假承诺或发誓时做出这个手势，表示承诺或誓言无效、不算数。此外，还可以表示“祈求好运”。人们相信两指交叉(crossed)成X状，正好是十字架的形状，可以祈求上帝庇护，给自己带来好运。英国国家彩票的标志就是交叉的两指。
