I = Ilsa(依尔莎)
S = Sam(山姆)
I: Hello, Sam.
S: Hello, Miss Ilsa. I never expected to see you again.
I: It’s been a long time.
S: Yes, ma’am. A lot of water under the bridge. ①
I: Some of the old songs, Sam.
S: Yes, ma’am.
I: Where is Rick?
S: I don’t know. I ain’t seen him all night. ②
I: When will he be back?
S: Not tonight no more. He ain’t coming... He went home. ②
I: Does he always leave so early?
S: Oh, he never... well, he’s got a girl up to the Blue Parrot. Goes up there all the time.
I: You used to be a much better liar, Sam.
S: Leave him alone, Miss Ilsa. You’re bad luck to him.
I: Play it once, Sam. For old times’ sake. ③
S: I don’t know what you mean, Miss Ilsa.
I: Play it, Sam. Play “As Time Goes By.”
S: I can’t remember it, Miss Ilsa. I’m a little rusty on it.
I: I’ll hum it for you. Sing it, Sam.
1. A lot of water under the bridge.
A lot of water under the bridge译为“时光似流水”或“往事如烟”。
2. I ain’t seen him all night.
片中ain’t相当于have not,也可用作am not,are not,is not以及has not的缩略语。在同一片段中,山姆说He ain’t coming一句中的ain’t就相当于is not,意思是告诉依尔莎,里克今晚不会来了,让她死心。
3. For old times’ sake.
for the sake of表示“为了…… 此处女主角依尔莎口中的For old times’ sake相当于for the sake of old times,是请求山姆看在过去的份儿上,为她弹奏一首老歌。
all the time 始终,一直,总是
rusty a.
hum v.
1. You used to be a much better liar, Sam.
used to中used的[d]不发音,to的[t]发音。
2. Leave him alone, Miss Ilsa.
3. You’re bad luck to him.
片段中类似的有old songs,don’t know,went home。
4. I can’t remember it, Miss Ilsa.
其中can’t弱读为[kənt]。
L = Laszlo(拉斯罗)
R = Rick(里克)
L: It’s nothing, just a little cut. We had to get through a window.
R: This might come in handy.
L: Thank you.
R: Had a close one, eh? ①
L: Yes, rather.
R: Don’t you sometimes wonder if it’s worth all this? I mean, what you’re fighting for.
L: We might as well question why we breathe. If we stop breathing, we’ll die. If we stop fighting our enemies, the world will die.
R: What of it? Then it’ll be out of its misery ② .
L: You know how you sound, Monsieur Blaine? Like a man who’s trying to convince himself of something he doesn’t believe in his heart. Each of us has a destiny. For good, or for evil.
R: I get the point.
L: I wonder if you do. I wonder if you know that you’re trying to escape from yourself and that you’ll never succeed.
R: You seem to know all about my destiny.
L: I know a good deal more about you than you suspect. I know, for instance, that you’re in love with a woman. It’s perhaps a strange circumstance that we both should be in love with the same woman. The first evening I came into this café, I knew there was something between you and Ilsa. Since no one is to blame, I demand no explanation. ③ I ask only one thing. You won’t give me the letters of transit. All right. But I want my wife to be safe. I ask you as a favor to use the letters to take her away from Casablanca.
R: You love her that much?
L: Apparently you think of me only as the leader of a cause. Well, I am also a human being. Well, I am also a human being. Yes, I love her that much.
1. Had a close one, eh?
have a close one意为“死里逃生”,完整的说法应为have a close shave。同义词组有have a narrow escape。
2. What of it? Then it’ll be out of its misery.
what of it意为“又怎么样呢,那有什么关系呢”。 If we stop fighting our enemies, the world will die中的the world。Then it’ll be out of its misery可译为“要是那样,苦难也就结束了”。
3. Since no one is to blame, I demand no explanation.
no one is to blame字面意思是“不是谁的错,没有人应该受到责备”。
come in handy 迟早有用,派得上用场
might as well 莫如,何妨,还是……的好
destiny n.
suspect v.
transit n.
cause n.
1. If we stop breathing, we’ll die.
2. I wonder if you know that you’re trying to escape from yourself and that you’ll never succeed.
and that中,just的[t]只轻微发音,然后再发that的[ð],同一片段中类似的还有demand no。
R = Rick(里克)
I = Ilsa(依尔莎)
C = Captain Renault(雷诺上尉)
R: If you don’t mind, fill in the names. That’ll make it more official.
C: You think of everything, don’t you?
R: And the names are Mr. And Mrs. Victor Laszlo.
I: But why my name, Richard?
R: Because you’re getting on that plane.
I: I don’t understand. What about you?
R: I’m staying with him till the plane gets safely away.
I: No, Richard. What has happened? Last night you said...
R: Last night we said a great many things. You said I was to do the thinking for both of us. I’ve done a lot of it since then. It adds up to one thing: You’re getting on that plane with Victor where you belong. ①
I: But Richard, No, I...
R: Now, you’ve got to listen to me. Do you have any idea what you’d have to look forward to if you stayed here? Nine chances out of ten, we’d both wind up in a concentration camp. Isn’t that true, Louis?
C: I’m afraid Major Strasser would insist.
I: You’re saying this only to make me go.
R: I’ m saying it because it’s true. Inside of us we both know you belong with Victor. You’re part of his work, the thing that keeps him going . If that plane leaves ground and you’re not with him, you’ll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.
I: But what about us?
R: We’ll always have Paris. We didn’t have... We’d lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night.
I: When I said I would never leave you.
R: And you never will. But I’ve got a job to do too. Where I’m going, you can’t follow. What I ’ ve got to do you can’t be any part of. Ilsa, I’m no good at being noble. But it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. ② Someday you’ll understand that. Now, now, here ’ s looking at you , kid.
1. It adds up to one thing. You’re getting on that plane with Victor where you belong.
add up to意为“归结为,总起来说”,可以用come (down) to或boil down to替换。
2. But it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.
nine chances out of ten
concentration camp n. 集中营
Here’s looking at you(在此)祝福你
1. What about you?
what about连读为[hwɔt ə’baut]。
2. You’re part of his work, the thing that keeps him going.
part of连读为[pa :t əv],其中of弱读为[əv]。that keeps中,that的[t]不发音,keeps的[k]发音。
3. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.
not today中,not的[t]不发音,today的[t]发音。 but soon中,but的[t]只轻微发音,然后再发soon的[s]。片段中类似的还有last night和understand that。
4. What I’ve got to do you can’t be any part of.
can’t弱读为[kənt]。got to中,got的[t]不发音,to的[t]发音。
