at sixes and sevens最早出现在1374年乔叟的《坎特伯雷故事》（ The Canterbury Tales ）中。有人用全部家当下注，赌掷到大的点数（“to set on six and seven”）。在等待结果时，他的心情“乱得很”（at sixes and sevens）。虽然结果如何我们不得而知，不过这个短语却由此沿用至今。
at sixes and sevens原意为“乱七八糟、混乱的”，现引申为“格格不入”。歌词中的she指代“贝隆夫人”，而you指代“她的祖国阿根廷”。这两句歌词表现了女主人公在努力寻求国家改革之路上遇到的困难波折，同时也折射出她锐意改革的坚定信念。
