It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

1. 原文 I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened.
2. 原文 After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
分析 句中介词after后跟动名词作宾语,动名词短语中that引导的宾语从句为主从复合句,if引导条件状语从句;主句中coming towards me为现在分词作宾语补足语;his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward为独立主格结构作状语。
2. 原文信息:toothy smile、hesitated、laugh at、regular kid、be familiar with、challenges
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn ' t look at me. I came close to him and said gently, “Why did you decide to give up the event? You have prepared it for a long time.” David lowered his head, crying softly. After a few minutes, he raised his head, tears in his eyes, “I don't want to be made fun of in public.” I smiled, tapping him on the shoulder, “You are an excellent student. You are a brave boy with great determination. You should believe in yourself.” Hearing my words, he stood up slowly and walked towards the running field.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The cross-country run began and David kept up with the team tightly. An hour later, they could see the finishing line in the distance. I waved at him, clapping my hands loudly, “Come on! Come on!” At last, he came to the finishing line and hugged me firmly, sweat mixed with tears rolling down his cheeks. “You are successful and you defeat yourself,” I shouted at him.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn ' t look at me. I tapped him on the shoulder gently, touched his soft hair, and whispered to him, “Could you tell me the reason why you decided to quit the event? You have practiced so hard and long.” David buried his face in his hands, weeping. After a few minutes, he raised his head with watery eyes, “I don't want to be laughed at in public.” I smiled, staring at the far distance, “You have no difference with other students in my heart. As a brave boy with great determination, you should have faith in yourself.” Hearing my words, he rose to his feet slowly and walked towards the running field.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The cross-country run began and David held up his head high, wearing a confident smile on his face. I followed them, cheering on him from behind. An hour later, the finishing line was within sight. David stepped toughly towards the line, sweat rolling down his cheeks. I clapped my hands, “Come on! Come on!” Eventually, he came to the finishing line and dived into my arms, hugging me tightly. “You make it and your hard practice has paid off,” I cried loudly.
